Another DIR-655 constantly dropping connection with cable modem
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:07:16 PM »

My router keeps dropping connection with moto cable modem. I don't think the router is actually rebooting, but its connection up time never seems to last past 30 mins. I have tried suggestion FurryNutz has made for others about changing settings and have tried firmware 2.11,2.10,2.07. I can't seem to fix it. The router was working fine for a little over a year. now is constantly dropping connection.

Any suggestions? I plan to try 2.03, 2.01, and 2.00 to see if one of them will fix. other wise i think the router is dying.

Link>Welcome!

  • Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
  • Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
  • For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

If the modem isn't getting a good signal, you need to start there.
I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

I've tested my 655 Rev B out on several versions of FW, never have seen it drop in 30mins, less or more. If each FW version is exhibiting the same problem, it's not the router or FW, and points to the ISP modem or ISP service.

Wired
Yes factory resets have been preformed before and after firmware updates.
Firmware changes are a result of trying to fix the dropping connections
Motorola SB5101U SURFboard
Comcast economy class service 3.5mbit down
I have called Comcast, they have said everything is good on their end.

I'd try this if you can, got to some place that you can buy your own modem thats supported by CC as a test, and someplace that has a refund policy.

Another test would be to test the 655 at a friends, neighbor or families place to see if the problem follows. I know this seems extreme however helps to see if problem follows or not.

What wired and wireless devices do you have connected? You might try to test also with ALL devices disabled accept for one wired PC.

  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

CC or ISP will usually never admit that theres a problem. Might ask someone to verify signals at the modem on site to be sure.

Any updates?!? My DIR-655 is now acting up. Both Wired and Wireless.
I've tried enabling and disabling everything in the UI.
When I log into the UI the connection resumes. If that doesn't work then I restart the router.  ???
Maybe this router is just dying ..? :-\
