Give up on 655 and get a new router?
« on: December 23, 2014, 08:26:44 AM »

As I read thru posts here, it would seem that I am operating a semi-dinosaur router in the DIR-655.

Make no mistake, it is operating splendidly for me, but there seem to be things that I read about doing which the router is not capable of.

It's a DIR-655  with "B" hardware and 2.0 firmware.

One thing I'd really like to do, now that I have a three-computer network up and operating (2 WIN7 PRO and 1 WIN XP), I would like to share a 2TB drive thru the router's USB port.  Instructions I have found say I need to open the router's interface and find the SAMBA settings or FILE SHARE settings in the Admin tab, but  I can find neither.  I suspect the firmware needs updating?

I am a little literate in networking (I know the difference between an RJ45 and an RCA plug   ::)) but I'm not the quickest car on the track.

I had looked about the forum but nothing I could find really answered my problem, and the plethora of advice for and against upgrading the firmware just has me sitting and wondering...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

If your using v2.00 FW and haven't updated, then I recommend updating FW. I have this same model router online currently and it's working well with all of my PCs and devices. Windows 7 and Apple devices.

I recommend following this, factory reset, apply FW, factory reset once more then set up from scratch:
FW Update Process[/list]

I use this http://silexamerica.com/campaign/sx-virtual-link-downloads/
Only one machine can access the hdd at a time. You use it to connect, then disconnect. Works well enough for our two win7 machines, to get to docs, photos and music.
