Reformatting large HDDs
« on: January 28, 2015, 04:51:22 AM »

I have owned a DNS-323 for some time, - used as an image bank with 2X500GB HDDs. It is now full, and a purchased two new 3TB HDDs, and set them inside DNS-323 and started formatting. When that was finished I saw only 2TB of the HDDs were used. A quick search for capasity spec. of the DNS-323 showed me that it could manage max 2TB. OK. I took the two new HDDs out and tried with "Partition Master" to reformat them to normal 3TB NTFS. But this seems difficult. The space above 2TB will always remain as an "unallocated" space. I do not see how I can reset them back to "factory state" and from there get them formatted for fully use of the capasity of 3TB. Do anyone with experience have a good advice?

Thank You. I do now know that the DNS-323 will not support 3TB. My question is really. Is my 3TB HDD damaged aftrer having been formatted in a DNS-323. Will I nerver be able to gain the full capasity of this disks?

I doubt that your disk is damaged physically, you just need the correct tools to reset the MBR.
Download something like DFSee http://www.dfsee.com/ it is free to use for a limited time but if you want support you should register it.  Use it with the advanced menu and select the correct disk - then make sure it is the correct disk before you do anything you might regret.  Then, using the Mode=FDISK menu go to MBR or EBR area operations then select New MBR code ERASE table - select the correct disk, double check the warning messages then OK the operation.

You should get back the full capacity of your disk.

The manufacturer (WD, Seagate, etc) should provide a maintenance utility that can format, manage and reset the drives as well as perform other diagnostic functions.
