no longer works with switches and wireless
« on: January 26, 2015, 03:57:49 PM »

As of this AM my DIR-655 will not work with either of my two switches or allow me to make a wireless connection.

If I attempt to login to the routher using the default IP address 192.168.0.1 in IE it results in a Yahoo search results, in Chrome it results in "Unable to access the network". This attempt was from a PC that is directly connected to the DIR-655 and it does have internet access.
I attempted to ping 192.168.0.1 (from the same PC that attempted the login) and get the following.
Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),

I currently have my desktop and laptop connected to a port on the back of the DIR-655 and they can access the network and each other. I also have two switches connected to the other two ports on the DIR-655. As of this AM I cannot see anything connected to these switches and the PCs I have connected to these switches cannot see the internet or anything on my LAN.

  • My hardware version is A4 (suggestion, use a larger font on the label, it is too difficult to read by older people)
  • Because I cannot login to the router I have no idea what the firmware  version is. I have never updated the firmware.
  • I'm located in Arizona
  • I have NOT performed a factory reset
  • I have cable service (Cableone), 50MB service
  • I have a SB6120 for my modem
The past couple of days I've had very slow internet response on numerous web pages. This is from the PC that currently has internet connection.

Link>Welcome!

Factory reset the router and set up from scratch with out any swtiches connected. Just directly wired LAN cable connection with the PC  to the back of the router.

What mfr and model are the swtiches?

Find out what the FW version is after the factory reset. Maybe due for a FW update...If you can get access to the routers web page and choose to update FW, Please follow this:

OK I've made some progress but not success.

Switches (I've been using these for about 5 years without issues)
1) Linksys - EF4124
2) ConnectGear - 24 port Fast Ethernet Switch (I don't see any other model identification and due to the way I have mounted it in the cabinet it is difficult to move).

I performed a factory reset and did not get the exact results I was expecting.
1) All of the print jobs that were queued printed
2) I can now see all of my printers
3) I can now login to the router via browser - here I was surprised that my password still worked and it looks like all of my settings are still in place.
4) I have firmware v1.21 installed, my router HW version is A4, I think the latest is v1.37 but I have not tried to install it at this time.

Before performing the reset I had downloaded from D-Link the latest of everything for the modem from D-Link

I attempted a setup using DIR-655_REVA_ROUTERSETUP_4.10.EXE and fail at step 3 after connecting the router to my PC and the power to the router. The "Quick Router Setup" app spins for about 2 minutes and then reports "Error 321 Ethernet Cable Not Connected" I know the cable is connected and good. As a test I connected the PC with the same Ethernet cable directly to my cable modem and I get internet access. If I connect the laptop to the router port and my desktop to a router port they can see each other and I can access disk from one system to the other.

Because it appears that the router settings were not altered by the reset I reconnected everything as it was but now I'm not able to access the internet from any of my system. Until the issue is resolved I have connected my desktop directly to my cable modem.

Ok, sounds like something got hung up on the router and the reset fixed it.

I recommend not using the setup CD to set up the router. AT most using factory settings is all that needed to get the router working with Internet. If you need you can walk thru the on board set up wizard however I recommend configuring the router manually. Set up SSID and PWs under Setup/Wireless/Manual. Save any changes.

Since your using a older version of FW, I recommend setting IE to compatibility mode as newer version of IE and other browsers have been updated in handling of the routers older web page code, which for now, if you don't update, will be recommended for IE. I have an A4 as well and it's on v1.11 and I have to use compatibility mode in IE when I configure it.

After you get the router set up, do a save configuration under Tools/System and save to file. In case you have to factory reset, you can just reload the saved config file.

Give it some time and if you don't see any problems come back, keep whats loaded for now. Next time, upgrade to v1.37 using the following process for future reference:

I can login to the DIR-655 using IE (v 11.0.9600) but before the login screen is seen I see an IE pop-up "Your web browser is old, some features of this web site may not work. Please upgrade your browser. I can also login to the DIR-665 using Chrome v40.0.2214.91 n. After logging in it seems that I have full control except in IE I frequently see the pop-up.

I just added http://192.168.0.1/ to the Compatibility View list and now I do not see the pop-up as above when I usw 192.168.0.1 as the URL in IE.

I no longer have the physical CD or if I do I have no idea where it is. When you say "I recommend not using the setup CD to set up the router" does this also include using DIR-655_REVA_ROUTERSETUP_4.10.EXE which I downloaded from the D-Link site?

Currently it appears that all of my older settings are still in the DIR-655, e.g. I don't think pressing the reset button took me back to factory settings. To access the router I still use the same password (key/passphrase I previously used). The router and my PCs have been running almost 12 hours since I pressed the reset and reconnected everything and I have not noticed any issues.

Thanks for letting me know how to save the configuration file. I was on a different screen (e.g. the wrong screen) and saw save configuration and was totally lost when I attempted to save the configuration.

Currently I'm very tired and will hold off on the firmware upgrade otherwise I may make some dumb user mistake.
Much thanks for the help.

Yes, once you set compatibility mode in IE, you'll be fine.

Yes, any set up SW or CD doesn't need to be used any more and the router can be set up using the routers web page. Most routers now days don't come with a set up CD anymore.  ::)

I recommend running the router as is for now with out updating FW. Later on if you seem to exhibit problems, then maybe update.

Enjoy.  ;)

All seems to be working at this time, again thanks for the help.

I'm going to take your suggestion and just leave the FW as is unless I encounter other issues. At this point, if it is not broke then leave it alone.
