DIR-655 Connects wifi devices but will not browse
« on: January 30, 2015, 04:31:00 PM »

I have a Windows 8.1 Pro Desktop PC hardwired that works fine, a Dell XPS laptop wireless also works fine connected to Skype and browse on the device daily, Lenovo laptop wireless also works flawlessly, BUT a Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsun Galaxy Tab4, and HTC One M8 all connect and can obtain an IP address but are completely unable to browse anything at all.

I factory reset the unit and re-enabled my wifi. SSID set but not broadcast, WPA2 AES TKIP and as I said everything connects perfectly no issues at all. Try to go anywhere that requires getting out and nothing happens at all. I left the DNS blank initially, then hardset to my ISP Cox Communications, same issue. Set to Google DNS still same issue.

The HTC reports connectivity issues with the DIR-655, but remains connected.

Any help will be appreciated.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. Try channel 48 or 149 on 5Ghz.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Do devices connect to the WiFi if the WiFi SSID isn't hidden?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

Additional information, last night I turned off QOS and I was then able to browse, but the speeds are extremely slow. I also noticed after reading others forum posts that my time and date were off so I enabled NTP server, which corrected that issue. I did not immediately see a firmware revision update but this morning I do see 2.11 available. Is this a suggested update that is stable, or should I find a previous revision?

Here is the requested info:

Hardware Version: B1
Firmware Version: 2.00NA

ISP: Cox Communications - Cable
Modem: Motorola SB6121

-SSID has been changed, but I do not have the SSID broadcasting.
-I am using mixed mode n and g, with channel selection and channel width both set to auto. I live in an apartment and there are 12 other wifi signals in the area, only 2 of them have moderately good signal though. I have everything set to auto to try and be as polite as possible with my signal.
-Wifi devices are 2 laptops (Dell and Lenovo), Samsung Galaxy S3 and Tab4, and HTC One M8. Only the Samsung and HTC devices are having the issue.
-No other wireless devices in the apartment

Everything connects without issue and displays a full wifi signal strength. Previously they just would not browse. Now they will browse but the speeds are extremely slow speedtest.net reports my down at 65.25 Mbps and my up at 7.56 Mbps on my hardlined PC.

Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy

  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Being a apt complex may be that your in a WiFi congested area. If wired connections work ok and wireless do no, may need to upgrade some wifi devices to 5Ghz. However lets see if we can do some adjustments and at very least, do a FW upgrade. You are several versions behind...Lets see if we can help make some adjustments first.

- Updated the FW to 2.11
- Hard set the network to N only, the channel to 11, and channel width to 20Mhz.

All wifi devices now connect and browse. Tested mobile devices first and they were all able to browse when they were not before. Tested both laptops to verify that they were still able to browse and they were. So everything is working now.

Thank you for your help.

I am getting better stability set to 20Mhz. There is too much wifi traffic in my area for the wider channel.

I am not really seeing any speed issues that would lead me to needing the extra throughput. I was HD streaming to my tablet last night for 2 hours without any buffering issues, so I will see how it goes.

Ok, was just checking. Yes if you have alot of neighboring Wifi interferences, then Auto 20/40Mhz may see problems.

Sounds like its working well now. Enjoy.

Well it worked great for 2 days and now I am back to where I started.

Both of my laptops can connect, browse, Skype, VPN etc. but my neither of my cell phones or tablet are able to do anything other than connect.

It just seems odd that the laptops work perfectly absolutely no interruption in anything I can normally do on them. The HTC One and Samsung Tablet both connect and report that they have full signal, I have turned off mobile data on both devices, disconnected and connect again to the wifi and seen no improvement when the issue is occurring.

Can you post a INSSIDer screen capture of all the wireless near by please?
Adding Screenshots In A Post

Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. Try Medium or Low.
