PS3 Won't find DNS-323 as a media server
« on: June 14, 2009, 02:33:41 PM »

My wife just picked up a PS3 and so I started looking around at the options. I noticed it has the option to search for media servers so I have been unsuccessfully trying to get it to connect to my NAS. I've had the DNS-323 for a while and it's been great but no setting I have tried will get the PS3 to pick it up at all. I've seen lots of threads about problems with streaming or file size/name issues but I can't seem to find anyone else who's PS3 refuses to acknowledge that the NAS is on the network. They are both cabled into an unmanaged switch and then into a Linksys WRT54G. I upgraded firmware on my PS3, NAS (to 1.07) and the router. I enabled UPnP on both the NAS and the router. Oddly, my router is being seen by my PCs but not the NAS (as a UPnP networked device) but I can access the NAS as normal otherwise, so I'm not sure if I am just not setting it correctly or if I should try defaulting the NAS and reconfiguring it. It is my primary storage and largely is not backed up otherwise, so I can't chance wiping the data.

have you enabled the upnp server on the NAS?  it is also a good idea to create a folder for all your media that you want streamed.

once i did that it just appeared on my PS3.

Mine just worked as well, no problems.  Check and make sure that you didn't give your DNS a non-standard name; mine is simply named "DNS323".  Both my PS3 and DNS323 are on the same unmanaged 1000Mb switch.

Yeah you should just be able to see it available when you look for available media servers on the network. Just make sure that it is enabled on the DNS-323. by default is it disabled with recent firmware.

I had problems with the PS3 when trying to detect the NAS using the PS3's wireless connection. Are you connecting the PS3 to the network wired or wirelessly ?

Yeah I have herd a lot about getting DLNA errors when you connect wirelessy with the PS3 then you connect wired and no problem. That will be something to test out satcomjimmy.
