I've been settling with the connection I have been getting with the router for the past couple years thinking it was my ISP. After upgrading my connection I figured it was time to get things working correctly. I have been scouring the forum to find a resolution, but only have gotten minor improvement. Without the router the data rates are at what they are supposed to be. Both wired and wireless get the same speeds.

DL/UL Rate: 10 Mbps/5 Mbps
What DL/UL Rate should be: 30 Mbps/5 Mbps
ISP: Time Warner Cable Wisconsin
Hardware: Version A2
Firmware:  1.23NA 2010/04/15
-Advanced DNS Services Turned off
-Gamefuel disabled
-Enabled Use Unicasting
-Turned on DNS Relay under
-Firewall set to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP
-Enabled uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming
-Turned off WISH, and WPS
-WAN Port Speed set to Auto
-Current Time Zone, Date and Time set. Used an NTP Server feature.

Doing the former bumped up my speed to 10 Mbps. Not sure what I can do now to get speeds to where they should be.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values

I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. For DSL or Fiber service lines, ensure that the ISP is using good working phone or cable lines to the DSL modem and that the phone lines are filtered correctly. For cable Internet, RG-6 coaxial cable is needed, not RG-59. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. I recommend having the ISP service physically check the lines going from the out side to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

    What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? Motorola SURFboard SB6141
    Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. CAT5 cable swapped, but no change. It has done 30 Mbps when connected directly to modem.
    Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. MTU = 1500

Are you testing speeds wired or wireless connected to the router? Both, same results with either option.

The cables were replaced when a squirrel chewed through the line back in April. Without the router my speeds are just fine, but once its connected it drops 60%.

What speed testing site are you using?
Using the same or different servers to test?

• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations

• Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
• Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
• Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Just got home from a friends place and had the same results there.

Have you tried different PCs?
Yes, 2 towers, 3 laptops, 1 tablet and several phones produced the same results.
What speed testing site are you using?
testmy.net and speedtest.net
Using the same or different servers to test?
Tried a multitude of servers around my area. But alas no change in results.

It was set to automatic originally, but in the process of testing it we changed it to each setting to see what worked. No change.

    Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Yes, but I can only occasionally pick them up. None in range to actually connect.

After a couple hours of going over everything we knew and then everything that was asked here, we gave up. I am currently using an old Netgear he had laying around. I really don't like it but it is giving me the speeds that I am paying for. So I will deal with it for now until I can figure out the issue with my DGL-4500 or buy a new router.

Try this after turning OFF all other devcies and disconnecting it from the ISP modem:
Manually download the FW file to the local PCs desktop.
Factory reset the router, use IE or FF with any security browser add-ons disabled, load the FW file and let it process.
Factory reset the router once again and set up from scratch.

Rolled back the firmware to 1.15 to see if that would make a difference, which it didn't. But now i have FW 1.15 and all the previous settings and no change. And yes I factory reset the router afterwards.

Are you setting up from scratch after the last reset? Not load any saved router config files?

Also, check the voltage coming off the plug, it should be 12v 2amps and no less. We have seen adapters go bad...

Let us know if you can still test it out at your buddies place. Need to see if the problem follows. Possible HW issue however need to confirm at different location for similar problem.

Any chance you have a spare router on hand? If you don't, go to Frys, or Best Buy and pick up a new router. They both and return refund policies. See if new router does same thing.
