Welcome Back!- What region are you located?
Do you game wired or wirelessly? I recommend gaming via wired connections only if your a real avid gamer. Wireless has improved over the years however can still be problematic for those in wireless congested areas.
I don't recommend using DMZ for gaming as it can bypass the routers QoS features that help in gaming and maintaining good connections from your router to the ISP service.
Static IP addresses should be used outside of the routers default IP address pool and usually for devices that don't need much router management, like pritners, phones, controllers, sensors, cameras and NAS. I use IP reservations on my game consoles for gaming.
Yes this is a good router for gaming. I also enjoy the DIR-868L Rev A as well. However that case style is different and wireless antenna are internal. The UI on the 880L differs from the 655 and 868L. There is a Rev B DIR-868L now with the same UI as teh 880L. Rev A has the older UI. Also the DIR-866L has the old UI. So be aware of UI differences.
You can get the DIR-868L on the cheap refurb direct from D-Link:
