my DIR 615 throttles my download speed
« on: July 29, 2015, 08:12:41 AM »

Hi,

I have a DIR 615, Hardware Version: E4     Firmware Version: 5.12

I noticed that it actually throttles my download speed: When I test my speed with the Cable plugged into my laptop I am getting 16 Mbps download / 4 Mbps upload ( what i should normally get ), but when connecting the router I can only get max 8Mbps /4Mbps, so basically it reduced my download speed by 50%

I did the following with no success ( still getting half speed ):
Ensured DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
Turned off QoS options.
Turned on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensureed  devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Any other ideas?

Hi, please find below my answers:

What region are you located? Middle East
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router? wired when i set-it up now wireless
Has a Factory Reset been performed? yes, twice

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations  local one in Dubai
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?  DSL
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have? i dont' see the ISP modem, i connect DIR 615 to a socket via cable. The ISP modem is somewhere in the building on their switch
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended. - done that, no changes
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values - MTU is set at default value 1500
Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual. done that, no improvements :(

sorry, slight amendment - didn't change the cable between modem and router as modem is not in the apartment, I thought you meant cable from the socket to the router :)

How about cable between wall and router?
Are you speed testing on wired or wireless?
Do wired LAN cable speed test with a PC work to spec when connected to the router?

Hi answers to your questions below:

How about cable between wall and router? - done that a few times no change. I use the same cables to connect from wall socket directly to the PC and I get full speed, so it's definitely not the cable
Are you speed testing on wired or wireless? I am test speeding on wireless then I connect the cable from the wall socket directly to the laptop to compare Wireless download speed is 50% compared to wired connection directly from the wall socket
Do wired LAN cable speed test with a PC work to spec when connected to the router? i just done that and i get full speed, it works to specs :( so the router provides full speed when connected to a PC via wired LAN cable

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated.
  • Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interferences? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free.
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-basics/31083-smallnetbuilders-wireless-faq-the-essentials

Its not really recommended to speed test via WiFi due to many variables that can cause inaccurate results....Mfr wireless device design and support will be a factor.  We don't recommend speed testing over WiFi as a default test due to issues like this and many other factors and variables that lead to inaccurate results. Testing over wired LAN cables for default speed tests is preferred.

Done all you suggested still no changes. See my ansers below:

Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Ensure that different SSID names are used between each WiFi 2.4/5Ghz radios. Can be anything and not something that's already in use by any neighbouring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual. - already done that when configuring
What wireless modes are you using? - I tried all mdes, no change
2.4Ghz Routers only: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N? - i tried that, no change
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only. - done that, no change
Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear. 13 for EU regions. - tried with channel 1, 6 and 11 as manual channels, still no improvement
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES. I am using WPA personal. I played with all the security settings to see if there is a change but np result
What wireless devices do you have connected? - my laptop and a few mobile phones ( android and iPhone )
Ensure any devices with WiFi adapter drivers are updated. all devices have updated drivers, including the laptop I am checking the speed on.
Any 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz cordless house phones or WiFi APs near by that maybe causing interferences? - no cordless phones or WiFi AP
Any other WiFi routers in the area that maybe causing interference? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many? Use v3, its free. - yes, many routers in the area as I live in a skyscraper with many apartments. InSSIDER can pick up another 8 wireless devices and it shows Co-channel 1 network and overlapping 1 network.  this is with channel 11 manually chosen on other channels it's more crowded
If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, Extra Wireless Protection and HT 20/40 Co-existence if you have it. Also testing with HT20/40Mhz Co-existence enabled will impact results as well. I prefer to use this option OFF. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. - dont' have these options.

I am running out of options here, still can't understand the drop in speed. :(  Anu other ideas?

the thing is, all there routers were there before when I didn't experience a speed issue, I used to be able to get full speed through wireless. Then suddenly i noticed speed halved.

Not sure what to do, whatever channel I will use, there is always another router on the same channel nearby.

so what are you suggesting? lower the transmit power? that's about the last thing I could do.

Give the power reduction a try. You seem to be in a noisy wifi environment...
