different firmwares everywhere
« on: August 02, 2015, 02:39:01 PM »

Hello,

i am a happy owner of a DLink DNS 345 NAS for quite some time already.

But what i always wondered and just now again is why every dlink webpage has different latest firmwares, different addons etc. ?

does this really depend on the country?

Example: http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/support/product/dns-345-sharecenter-4-bay-cloud-storage-4000
has the firmware version 1.05b02 but no amule addon.

http://support.dlink.com.au/Download/download.aspx?product=DNS-345
only 1.04b02 but instead has an amule addon.

http://www.dlink.com/de/de
has not even the DNS345 listed anymore. And if it is discontinued, at least provide a legacy page where you still list the discontinued hardware like some other companies.

This forum is also only talking about the 1.04b02 firmware.

this is just one example. and i would really like to know any reason of this.
Its more like a search to get the latest versions when it should be easy as to go to the website of your language and just download it.

With best regards,
an otherwise very happy owner of a dns345. ;)

If your DNS-345 is working without problems and doing what you want it to do then there is no valid reason for updating the firmware (newer is not necessarily better it can break existing setups).

As to why different sites carry different firmware versions, I have always assumed it is because of localisation, both in language and what hardware version was sold in that area.

its working. yes,

but i am more concerned about the security of the system. There where many security holes found in the time of the last firmware update and other NAS producers patched them a long time ago.

Also as i wrote, its not only firmwares but also addons etc. and i donīt think that is about localisations since that would not explain a different version number.

If your not running the DNS with access from the internet, then the DNS is safe and should work well. I'm using v1.03 on my 345 that shipped with it and have not updated it since.
