Breath some new life to the forum
« on: September 11, 2015, 02:51:00 PM »

Mixed post on 343 320 & 325 Sorry it is long and mixed so if wrong just waste it away. Just thought it might give some newbies some ideas is all. I was reading here and seen a speed post so thought I would throw in my 2 cents is all, I use all cat6 cable nice & fat 23G and I put on connectors so the cables are all cut to fit. The computer area is over 40ft from the rack the Nas and server set on with the router halfway.

A few months ago I was browsing and found this place and got interested in D-Link Nas boxes because of the reading here. I was then using an ole homebrew Nix box as a Nas with many many USB drives for video etc as I have a very large collection around 15TB. So I went seeking a test box and came up with a Dns-343 from a great refurb seller. At the same time I picked up a bunch of WD2003FYYS (2TB) drives all refurbs cheap. I also snatched up 2 DNS-320's and 3 DNS-325's. And i gotta say D-link for the cheap refurb price Nas works quite well. I really like the box design on the 343 but the thing is too much for the price when you can get 3 320's for same price but it is cool and works flawless with 4 of the WD2003FYYS drives in it.

The 320's all in all for me are best bargain at 40.00 a pop I now have 3 of em 2 for video and 1 for downloads etc. They are faster than the 343 on the lan and so far after a few months bulletproof for me. I do sorta think the box construction is a tad weak but for the cost they are really good on the lan here.

The 325's now they are my fav's but then at 50.00 still a bargain and the thing I like abt em is I can pull drives from either the 320's or the 343 and slap em in the 325 and no format but then I use standard no raid as I have backups of backups here. It is lots faster here than either of the others and they look so cool small and the case is to me designed great.

Being a long long time network guru I set my lan up weird to most folks and design it around internal speed. Netgear WNR3500 old ver 1 for a router cabled to it with a short cat6 to a Netgear GS608 switch I like to keep the router free for the web and keep local traffic off it. The nas boxes are on a rack with my ole Nix Webserver. They are all connected to another matching switch which is cabled to the 1 on the router. My computers are on the other side of the room on another switch like the rest and it is cabled to the 1 at the router also. That leaves the routers internal switch open and free so web is all it does. I tend to like the Netgear switchs because of the numbered lites ez to see what is what across the room. And I have many puters so lan is large and only use wifi to test and I have an old dell 620 lappy in bedroom for watching video etc it is on slow wifi.

An example to my ole Nix server which is on the same switch as the D-Link boxes.

The 343 and the 325's are never written to they are all full and 2 of the 325's hold a backup for the 343 so seldom ever on. 2 of the 320's are also full of video and are along with the rest backed up on USB drives. I have became quite impressed with D-Link Nas for the cost of refurbed boxes and they do a great job here for me and they all have the same drives in em. Why pay 100.00 for 1 3TB when you get 2 2TB's for less is my opinion except maybe less clutter of cables. I don't use the original PS for them I use a 12 volt 30amp PS for all the 320's and 325's then use original PS brick for the 343 so less plugging and less clutter. Good idea to fuse each box on 12 volt line I used 5 amp fuses. I can unhook and move them all as a unit and there is an external 6 inch 12 volt fan blows across the boxes they are neatly stacked beside my old Webserver. And the Webserver does duty as a nameserver on the lan so no dealing with IPs I hate messing with host files. A retired network tech that gets very bored at times lol.

They all were updated to newest firmware by the seller so all sorta plug and play and they tested them well it showed in the log. Wish I had gotten the 325's before I tested the 320's as that is my favs.  I use no apps at all on any of them I did test FFP and some apps on a 325 but that quickly bored me as I have the Nix box why diddle with a slow 256meg ram box when I have it all on the sever. Sorry for the huge post just wanted to give any newbies some ideas without digging deep in the forum. I have read page for page several times (old & retired nothing to do) this is a great place for Nas info now you all do a good job here.

Peace people
