Firmware 1.11.08 and 1.12.03 won't auto-reconnect to wifi
« on: December 06, 2015, 12:13:26 PM »

I've been troubleshooting a problem since a firmware upgrade.  What I found is that if a Wi-Fi connection to a 5010L is down for more than 2 minutes, the camera won't auto-reconnect later (unless it's power-cycled or connected to Ethernet).

This occurs with firmware 1.11.08 and 1.12.03.  Rolling back to firmware 1.10.07 restores proper functionality.  I have 5 5010Ls, all HW version A1.  I can easily recreate the problem by connecting a camera via Wi-Fi, disabling the Wi-Fi signal and just watching the clock for about two minutes.  The blue and green LEDs on the camera will start to flash.  Once that happens I can restore the Wi-Fi signal but the camera will not auto re-connect to that signal.  Power cycling the camera restores normal operation.  ( Or, if I attach and connect with an Ethernet cable, (without doing any power cycling) then detach the Ethernet cable, normal WiFi will resume.)  I have most of my 5010Ls connected with cat 5 and I see no problems with 1.11/1.12 firmware there.  I noticed the Wi-Fi problem (the day after upgrading firmware) because I have a nightly reboot device attached to my router and the router stays off for three minutes before power is restored. I may change the power-off period to only one minute...)

I also have three 5020L A1 cameras.  The only issue I see with firmware 1.11 and 1.12 on them is with the RED power LED.  If they lose a WIFI connection for more two minutes, the RED LED comes on and flashes once per second.  The flashing continues even after the camera reconnects to Wi-Fi.  Power cycling or connection to Ethernet restores normal functionality (the RED LED goes dark).  I want all LEDs off during normal operation so the RED LED would be an annoyance (not a show-stopper).  However, I connect all 5020Ls with cat5 and the flashing RED LED problem does not occur there.

I post this here just to let others know what I found.  I reported the 5010L problem to Dlink via email.

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
What wireless modes are you using?
What is the distance between the Camera and the main host router?
I recommend setting a static IP address ON the cameras outside of the main host routers default DHCP IP address pool: 192.168.#.10 and .11  DHCP

Test cameras with uPnP and uPnP Port Forwarding both enabled on ALL cameras: DCS Cloud (L) Series Camera Configuration and Mydlink.com

I'm located in the US. Over the last three years I've built my personal home surveillance system to have 27 active D-Link cameras.
I use a Cradlepoint MBR95 as the main router and have a DIR-825 and a Belkin N750DB as access points.
I use Wireless N Only with WPA2 and AES. Router is on Channel 11 with APs on 1 and 6. I live in a rural setting so there are only two or three SSIDs visible besides mine.
Distances from Cameras to main router are from three feet to three hundred feet.  I have nine 2330L, seven 2332L, six 5010L, three 5020L, one 2132 and one 2310 for a total of 27 cameras. Firmware is latest released (except for one still rolled back for testing.)
Most cameras are Ethernet (with Wi-Fi configured as backup) but some communicate only via Wi-Fi. There is a Powerline network with three nodes that support the farthest cameras. Network utilization is low - HD cameras record 24x7 at 7fps and SD cameras at 15-30fps, motion activated.
All cameras are monitored/recorded using D-ViewCam 3.6.3 on three PCs (two Win7 Home Premium and one Vista Business).  Total Storage space for recording is a little over 20TB.  All CPUs are E8400s and CPU utilization is under 90% on all machines.  I use a few other PCs for additional testing.
All cameras have DHCP reservations (along with every other device on my network).  The cameras are viewable/controllable using NO-IP dynamic DNS with my phone and tablets.
I'm retired from 20 years in IT and this is one of my hobbies.

I have at an installation where I upgraded 2 5010ls to the latest f/w as of nov 2015. I am hearing reports from the owner that both cameras drop out at different times. I'm not sure if this is related.

I too can confirm this exact problem with the 4 cameras I have upgraded to the latest firmware where they will not re-connect to wifi when it's more than around 2 minutes.  The scenario for this is the wireless router reboots for whatever reason, if it takes more than a couple of minutes to come back on line, the 4 cameras loose wifi connection and both the blue and green LED's blink slowly until you power cycle the camera.

The cameras  that stay on firmware 1.10.xx can re-connect fine after loosing wireless.

A couple of these cameras are in a high location where they can not be power cycled easily, so they remain dead unfortunately.

Any ideas?

From Canada.  The cameras are configured the same and connected via wifi to a ASUS RT-AC3200 running as a access point only.  Wireless N and WPA2.  Manually set IP's and port forwarding, WPS is disabled.

Can you downgrade back to v1.10 and test again?

Downgrade the firmware?  Yes, I already did that, from my earlier post "Rolling back to firmware 1.10.07 restores proper functionality.".  All my 5010Ls have been downgraded back and now work fine.

The ONLY way to recover from the faulty 11 and 12 firmware is to power cycle OR plug an Ethernet cable into the camera.  (If you can't reach the power connector, power off at the breaker box.)

The only 5010L cameras which should be using firmware 1.11.08 or 1.12.03 are those wired to Ethernet.  Even so, if there is a hope that they will fail over to Wi-Fi during a switch failure, the Wi-Fi is not dependable.

Yes!  This firmware 1.13.05 fixed the "won't reconnect to Wi-Fi after two minutes" problem.  Thanks for posting the link to the firmware.
