4x3TB RAID5 formatting stuck at 47%
« on: September 14, 2016, 12:05:34 AM »

Hi guys, just got my hands on a DNS-345 and put 4 3TB WD Greens into it (yeah, I would have gone with red but I already had 2 of the greens and I didn't want to mix and match). I've set it up in RAID 5 configuration and it partitioned just fine and started formatting. It didn't take long for it to get to 47%, less than an hour, but now its been sitting on 47% done for over 36 hours.

I've no idea if this is normal and formatting just takes a really long time or if something is indeed wrong. Searching about on the forums, it seems like I should pull the hard drives out, mount them in my PC and delete whatever partitions are there but I don't want to have to do that just to find that it wouldn't help.

I guess all I'm asking is if I should just wait some more to let it finish formatting or cancel it and jump straight into troubleshooting.

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?

Can you take all but one drive out and do a simple format of the one drive, then add a 2nd drive and do the same?
Are these drives listed on the DNS compatibility drive list?

My apploiges, the hardware is version A1; firmware v1.03 and I'm located in Australia. My router is a Netgear D6300.

The drives are all WD Green WD30EZRX-00MMMB0 3TB which are indeed listed as compatible.

So I think I've solved it anyways. I removed all the drives, mounted them in my PC and deleted all the partitions. I then installed just one drive and formatted that and that worked fine and I could copy files to and from the volume. Then I removed the drive, deleted the partitions again and this time re-installed all four drives and formatted them as RAID 5. That seems to have worked worked but I'm in the process of testing it now before copying over live data. If I have any more problems, I'll post back here.

Good to hear. Possible those drive had Mfr formatting on them and needed to be fully erased.
Glad you got it working.

Enjoy.  :)
