DIR-615 and VOIP compatibility
« on: December 16, 2015, 09:51:22 AM »

Hi, I joined the D-Link forums to help resolve an issue with my home network which may be related to the DIR-615 wireless router.

I just "finished" a home network reconfiguration which involved replacement of a combo cable modem/voice ATA/wireless router from Comcast (Arris TG862) with network hardware that I have purchased.  After reconfiguration, one major problem I am having is that we have lost connectivity from our landline phones, which rely on a VOIP ATA from Obihai (Obi202).  From the research I have done so far, I think that the VOIP traffic cannot get through the D-Link DIR-615 router.

My question is whether this router can be configured to work with telephony traffic to/from the Obihai, or whether it would be better to simply replace the DIR-615 router?  I already have a Sonicwall 170 which is available.

The network configuration is Comcast Xfinity internet, Arris Surfboard SB6141 cable modem, Sprint Airave, D-Link DIR-615 wireless router, then various switches, PCs, servers, and other devices on a 10/100 LAN.

Before installing the D-Link DIR-615 I updated its firmware to the latest revision (Hardware Version: C1 Firmware Version: 3.13NA).  This was the cable modem/router I used before subscribing to Comcast's Xfinity triple-play and using the Arris TG862 that supposedly worked best with Comcast telephony.  The Obi202 was installed, tested, and working with the Arris TG862 before the reconfiguration.

Internet connectivity seems to be working reliably, with the exception of the Airave and Obihai telephony.  My focus right now is getting the Obihai back online so we have telephone service.

There are a lot of forum posts describing problems with the DIR-615 and telephony.  Can this router be reconfigured to work reliably, or should it be replaced?  Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

What is the VoIP experiencing when connected to the 615?

Have you given a reserved IP address to the VoIP device, then input this IP address into the DMZ on the 615 router? Save settings and reboot router and VoIP device.

Also try disabling any ALG SIP options after testing with the DMZ.

Based on earlier research into similar DIR-615 postings in this and other forums:

The Obi202 ATA is assigned a reserved LAN address of 10.0.0.150 which I can reliably ping and interrogate by browser.  I have tested setting up 10.0.0.150 as a virtual server and configuring the IP as DMZ.  ALG SIP is unchecked.

Phones connected to the Obi's RJ11 telephone interface can interrogate the unit and initiate registration requests with the Obihai server, but the tech staff at Obihai says the are not receiving any registration traffic.

Thanks for reviewing this problem.  -BGood

When using the DMZ, Virtual Server and all other filters should not be configured.

Is this router being used at a business or a home configuration?

Ok, Looking at some info about it, seems that maybe there is some additional features on the VoIP device that maybe incompatible with the 615. Not sure if any other router may work. I have a ATT microcell and have always use the DMZ to avoid any incompatibilities with routers and VoIP can be kind of specific on how it operates and connects to home class routers. Seem some VoIP device that are meant to use in business environments and users trying to use home class routers. Just doesn't work. I presume this maybe one case. You might consider contacting the Mfr of the device and ask them specifically if there is any router configuration settings to try and or if any tested D-Link routers that would be more compatible with this device.

The 615 even though there is a Rev I out there, pretty much has gone thru it's development cycle and I don't think there is any more being done on it. Maybe time to find a newer generation DIR series router, if one is compatible.  :-\

Thanks for your suggestions, FurryNutz.  I'll try the Sonicwall.

As an epilog follow-up to this post, I was eventually able to get the Obi202 working with three routers: the Comcast Arris TG862 I was leasing from Comcast; the D-Link DIR-615 I resurrected from mothballs; and the Sonicwall TZ-170 which also came from the storage closet.  Although I think it is a little older, I settled on the Sonicwall because it seems to be a better router and the firmware is more reliable.  Frankly, I got scared about steveinWA's comments and the following reported problems with VOIP through the D-Link:

http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=5716.msg49033#msg49033

I posted my own experience on the dlink.com website under "DIR-615 and VOIP compatibility" (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=64016.0), but my working DIR-615 configuration included: putting the Obi in the DMZ with QoS enabled; and disabling SIP ALG.  Despite this DIR-615 configuration working with the Obi202, I decided to repurpose the DIR-615 as a wireless access point rather than a router.

The Sonicwall TZ-170 appears to be a cleaner working configuration and did not require exposing the Obi202 in the DMZ.  The working configuration simply has consistent NAT enabled and seems to work whether require SIP Transformations are enabled or disabled (mine are enabled).  My TZ-170 firmware is the standard version which does not have explicit QoS settings.

Hope this helps others trying to get VOIP to work with an older home router.

I'll presume that this is only for the DIR-615 and the Obi202 VoIP devices. It would be presumptuous to think all VoIP devices are effected. I presume there is some incompatibility issues. Hope the different router works well for you. Enjoy.  ;)
