FTP Problem

I created an FTP share on Volume_1. Filezilla connects to the server, but I have no access to Volume_1. I receive the following error:

Command:   CWD Volume_1
Response:   553 User not allow
Error:   Failed to retrieve directory listing

If I set anonymous access to read only and connect anonymously, I have access to the folder.
However, I want to block anonymous access and connect only with username and password.

Any help is really appreciated.

What FW version is currently loaded on the DNS?

Yes I have reviewed it.
The FW version is 1.07b04.
Filezilla connects to the server but I have no access to the shared folder (Volume_1).

And you are sure you have all credentials configured correctly on the DNS and FTP app?
Does using anonymous credentials work as a quick test?

Yes, all credentials are configured correctly and yes, anonymous work if I enable anonymous read only mode on the share.

Am I correct in assuming you have a user, with password, set for Volume_1 and that you put that user and password in FileZilla?  Can I also assume that you have given FTP access to that user with that password?

We have several instances where someone was trying to access the full volume using a user/password that only accessed a single folder.  I am not saying this is what is happening in your case but it is something to be aware of.

Hi Ivan, thank you for your answer, that solved the problem. I had not created any user and I was trying to access Volume_1 using username admin or root and relevant password. But I don't understand. Filezilla connects to NAS FTP server when using username admin or root, however, volume_1 is not accessible. Is there any solution to that?

What you are seeing is normal for FTP.  The FTP protocol only requires a legitimate IP address and username to connect between client and server.  After all, you have to be able to connect to a server and input a password.

Both Admin and root are considered legitimate user names in the Linux world and the NAS firmware is based on Linux. Since neither are setup as users you don't have access to anything which is 'a good thing' otherwise anyone would be able to access your NAS.

How would anyone get access to the files without the password? He would have only the username (root or admin) but not the password so he wouldnt have access to the files.
I understand what you are saying about Linux. However, it is strange because my previous NAS was eTrayz which is also a linux-based NAS. I could use root and admin (sysadmin) as username and by using the correct password I had access to the files. How can this be explained?

Unfortunately quite a lot of people don't set passwords when they should and then they wonder how everybody can access their data.

With your old NAS the people that wrote the firmware don't appear to be as security aware as they should have been because they left open a default root/admin account that allowed access to all files when it should have been an option to allow that account.

From what we have seen D-Link are at least thinking about having their NAS boxes secure by default thus requiring the user to make choices about what is allowed.

I see. Thank you for your answer. What about sftp? I have installed openssh and using winscp I can connect to 320L using as username root and password the one I have set for root. I have full access to the files. Why can this be done with sftp but not with ftp?  I am new to Linux and I am trying to understand. Thanks again!
