SMART test failure - why?
« on: June 14, 2016, 08:23:07 AM »

Gents,

I wonder if you can help me here, I have ran a SMART test on my drives, one passes, one fails, but I get no information as to why the failure has happened.
Are there any tools for the D-Link to analyse the disk?

Just so that you know, I have performed no analysis of this just yet, just that i have received an email from the 320L to say a SMART test failed.

Cheers
Rob

First thing, check your backup!

Next, open the web UI and go to 'Disk Management' --> 'S.M.A.R.T. Test'  and check which disk has failed the test.  Select that disk then select 'Extended Test' and click on Start.

When the test ends highlight the results, 'right click' (if you are right handed otherwise it is mouse button two) on it and read the report.

As to exactly why I can't say without knowing what item actually failed.  The more usual ones are:
Attribute  5  (relocated sector count)  When all the relocatable sectors are used up and another is needed the disk fails
Attribute  10 (spin up retries)  Too many indicates a failing drive motor.
Attribute  187 (reported uncorrectable errors)
Attribute 190/194 (drive temperature - 190 is highest and 194 is operating)  If the temperature exceeds 50 degree C for an extended period then the drive will fail.

Ivan,

Many thanks for that, I started the smart test, and got it to email me the results, i was hoping that the email would tell me what was wrong.

I will do what you have reported and find out the problem - thankfully i do have a backup (which makes a change!)

Thanks
Rob
