Backing up photos and files from Android phones
« on: April 06, 2016, 04:02:11 AM »

Hi Guys

This is my first post, I have just purchased a D-Link DNS-320L NAS, I’ve got it installed and running so no issues there.  There seems to be a lot you can do with the device, but I only really wanted it for 3 specific tasks.

1)   To backup photos and videos directly off two separate Android smartphones.
2)   To backup files from my desktop PC.
3)   To record video surveillance from a security camera.

I have fitted the NAS with two 2TB drives running in RAID1 for extra security.

What I’m struggling to understand right now is how best to achieve goal 1. Backing up photos and videos from two Android phones.  Can you guys tell me if I’m doing it correctly?

So far I’ve set up two folders on the NAS, let’s call them FolderA and FolderB.  FolderA should store the files from phone1, while FolderB stores the files from phone2.  I’ve set permissions on the two folders so that the user of phone1 can only see and edit the contents of FolderA while the user of phone2 can only see and edit the contents of Folder2.  In other words, the folders should be private to the users of each phone.

I’ve downloaded the “mydlink Access” app on each phone which appears to do the job of syncing photos and videos to the folders, however the problem is that there doesn’t seem to be any link between the user accounts you configure on the NAS and the mydlink Access app?  When you set up the app you have to enter the e-mail address and password of the mydlink account that the NAS is registered to on BOTH phones.  As a result the app doesn’t care who you are and takes no notice of the user account permissions on the NAS, so both phone users can look at each other’s backup folders via the mydlink Access app should they choose to because as far as the app is concerned they are both the same user.  The user accounts on the NAS only seem to apply to users browsing the NAS from a computer.

Is this correct or am I using the wrong app?  How can I link phone 1 to FolderA and phone2 to FolderB and have them both secure and private from each other?

Many thanks

Simplest option AFAIK

Forget the mydlink apps - complete waste of time and effort IMO

https://www.dlinkddns.com and create your own Dynamic DNS (use same login details as per mydlink)

Login to webgui of 320L - Management / Network Management / Dynamic DNS and add your details

Not sure how to auto backup but manually

Go to play store - ES File Explorer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en_GB

Network / Remote Manager / Turn on (there's a setting to send a shortcut to Home Screen to Turn On (for when you reboot or other)

Then you just copy files from Android to NAS or vice versa
