Hello,

I'm quite new to this forum so i hope this is the right space to post this message, if not please do refer me to where i need to be, tnx!

My question is simply if it is possible to use my adsl modem (an g624t) without the adsl connection (so as a router/hub only). I am soon switching from an adsl provider to a cable internet connection, and i was wondering if it is possible to use the (wireless and cabled) LAN capabilities of the router without actually having the internet connection from the modem but from an ethernet cable coming from my cable internet provider instead.

Is this possible, i couldn't find any information on this topic in the manual, nor somewhere else.

Just using the LAN port will not let you use this unit as a router.  Unless your cable Internet provider provides you with a router, you will have problems just using the LAN.

This unit probably does not have an Internet RJ-45 jack and the ADSL modem part is the "routing" module for the Internet access.

How do I connect to dialup (copper.net) from my LAN?

My connections:

wireless card on laptop -> wireless router -> D-Link DL-704 router -> USR External
MODEM -> phone line.

or

NIC on my desktop (w/cat5 cable) -> wireless router -> D-Link router ->
USR External MODEM -> phone line.

This has always worked for years w/my last dialup provider who just went
out of business.

I entered new dialup phone number and Dialup account (user name) for
copper.net

My modem dials out, makes a brief connection, and then I get Dialup failed
message.

These are the messages from my D-Link DL 704 router that connects to my
external MODEM that
I am getting from the last time I tried to use the above setup:

I am currently connected to coppernet with my laptop. I am using a PCMCIA
MODEM. It dials up and connects. I am considering connecting my USR
External MODEM Directly to the serial port on the laptop to see if that
works.

Coppernet support said that they do not have any policy against connecting
thru a LAN, but that they can not troubleshoot my router connection.

I really think it is dumb to have a laptop tethered to a phone line, unless
one really needs to have an extremely secure connection.
