think I broke it...
« on: September 10, 2016, 10:01:04 AM »

Hi All,  I hope someone can help.

I have a DNS-320L and had the 1.04 firmware installed, my twonky server oddly stopped working yesterday and I deleted it, reinstalled it, tried the basic onboard media server - none of it would process all the video files on my hard drive (about 2.5 gigs worth) and kept hanging at about 40% - so I upgraded the firmware to the latest one, not realising that the apps wouldn't work with this version.

I then tried flashing to the AltF firmware, realised I didn't know nearly enough about the technical side to use it and reverted back to the original one.

On reverting back all the on screen prompts said it worked just fine and success and everything but the device itself now has a solid blue LED on the power side and an orange LED on the hard drive side.

I can navigate to the hard drive through windows but I cannot access the web interface, I just get a 404 Not Found error.

I've confirmed on my router set up that it is using the correct IP address, I've hard reset using the reset button a couple of times but no luck.

Is there anyway to flash the firmware without accessing it from a web interface?  I'm guessing the installation didn't work despite telling me it did.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did you do a full reset using the reset button after each flashing?  If not, do it now.

yeah no I didn't do that after each one but I have done it since when I couldn't get it to work.

ok I've held the button in for about 30 seconds and it looked like it started to reboot, it's been about 5 minutes since and the hard drive light is now solid blue but the power light is flashing blue.  The ADSL light on the back is solid green and my router can identify an "unknown" device at the assigned IP address and my PC can longer connect to the hard drive.

OK, so it is not completely dead, just suffering a nervous breakdown.

If you can access the webUI you stand a good chance of reflashing with the 1.04 firmware.  If you can (don't forget the reset button after) you should be back at your starting point.  Make a full backup of your data if you don't have one (this has the advantage of checking the data integrity) just in case and try starting again with your media server.

If you can't access the webUI you are getting into the realm of taking the unit apart and using the serial port and a USB/serial to 3.3v adapter and command line interface to reflash the unit.

hey thanks for the reply, sorry I've been away for a couple of weeks and only just realised I'd had a reply!

Yeah I can't access the webUI at all, it just says "page not found" at the top.  I've got about a month left until I've had the unit for a year, will I still be under warranty or will updating the firmware have voided that?

I doubt that updating the firmware will void any warranty because there is that facility built into the unit firmware.  Just send it in as a warranty repair (mark each disk with which slot it is in) that way you can return then to their correct place when the unit is returned.
