Problem after disk filled up
« on: November 16, 2016, 08:10:10 AM »

Hi
Just a word about my experience with one of the disks in my 320L.
I was transferring over a file, when the transfer stopped with an error message.
I logged into the webpage for the DNS320L and it indicated one disk had zero free space.
Trying to delete some files was unsuccesful, rebooting the 320L didnt help.
So I couldnt delete any files to free up some space!
I solved the problem by pulling the drive out, and putting it in a USB drive dock. Windows found the drive/partition with my files, and I could clear some files.
Seems like a simple situation made complicated by the lack of a warning that disk space was running low?
Any comments?
Neil

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your DNS? Look at the sticker behind or under the device.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the DNSs web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

How big is the drive?
User should occasionally review the UI to check condition of the DNS and free space if they are actively using the drive(s).
How were you using the drive? Thru Windows Explorer? I don't know if Explorer will give space warnings for NAS drives...

Be very careful when using windows to read Limux formatted NAS drives, it has a nasty habit of making the drive useless when put back in the NAS.

Another thing you should check is the recycle bin if you have that activated.  It gets filled up but never emptied unless you make the effort to do so.

Hi FN. The hardware version is A3, running firmware 1.08, in the UK.
The disk that filled up is  2TB.
I was encoding a video file direct to the network drive, so it was incrementally adding to the file as it went along; I'm guessing if I'd put the finished output (4GB) file on my PC storage, then transferred it over to the network drive, it might have checked for space and warned if there wasn't enough?
Hi Ivan I guess I was lucky, I put the drive back after deleting some files and it was OK. I was able to delete the "recycle bin" folder then as well.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Possible that when you coding files directly to the DNS, that what ever program your using to do this may not be reporting or detecting space left. You may want to code on your PC first then copy over to the DNS. Explorer detects space left.
