DGS-1100-8 VLAN to DGS-1100-18

Hi to all
I have 2 DGS-1100 swithes, a  5 and 18 port.
I find the manual very confusing, and not fitting the firmware / UI.
So if anybody could help me with this I would be glad:

DGS-1100-18:
eth1: uplink to DGS-1100-5
eth2: all traffic on this port, goes to eth2 on DGS-1100-5
eth3-18: all traffic here, goes to eth3-5 on DGS-1100-5

DGS-1100-5:
eth1: uplink to DGS-1100-18
eth2: all traffic on this port, goes to eth2 on DGS-1100-18
eth3-5: all traffic here, goes to eth3-18 on DGS-1100-18

I think this should be simple, but how?

Hi,

given the default configuration of both switches (all ports are access ports to VLAN 1 untagged), all you need is a second VLAN 2, where you have to change the following settings (do these configuration changes while connected to port 2 of the switch):

  • DGS-1100-5, ports 3-5 and DGS-1100-18, ports 3-18: Set these ports as member ports of VLAN 2 untagged, set the PVID of these ports to 2 either.
  • DGS-1100-5, port 2 and DGS-1100-18, port 2: Leave the settings of these ports unchanged (member ports of VLAN 1 untagged, PVID=1)
  • DGS-1100-5, port 1 and DGS-1100-18, port 1: Change these ports to also be a member of VLAN 2 tagged (!) and leave the already existing membership of VLAN 1 untagged, also leave PVID=1 unchanged for these ports.

With these settings the management interfaces of both switches will remain within VLAN 1 and hence are only accessible via port 2 of any switch! Bear in mind, that before you connect both switches you have to change the management IP address of one of the switches, if they happen to be the same one within the default IP network defined for VLAN 1.

Of course you can also do it the other way round, leaving ports 3-5 and 3-18 configured for VLAN 1 untagged, PVID=1 and changing port 2 of any switch to be member of VLAN 2 untagged, PVID=2. In this case, connect to a port >=3 while configuring the switches. The configuration of port 1 has to be changed the same way as described above. Also the above given considerations concerning the management IP addresses have to be taken into account.
