I'm switching to another NAS. I am thinking I can pull one of the drives out of the DNS-345 and run degraded while I copy everything over. Can I pull a drive out with the DNS-345 running?   Can I remove a drive from a volume? I would assume that if this is possible it means a significant rebuild time.

As a backup plan I'm copying everything to a USB drive just in case this blows up...

I would keep the drives in the DNS and copy the data off that way.

You could pull the drives however you'd need a drive caddy and need EXT3 format drivers for Windows or use Linux to access the drives and and the data out side the DNS. Is the DNS not working for you?

I should clarify, I did not purchase new drives for my new NAS. I need to use the ones I have in the DNS.

Thus, pull a drive, stick into new NAS, copy data over network (probably rsync), then move the other three drives, change from RAID 1 to RAID 5 in new NAS, done.  If this doesn't work for some reason, plan B is I move all 4 drives, format everything, use USB drive. This makes me nervous.  What if the USB drive decides to crap out?

One of the shortcomings of the DNS is that the only cloud backup is Amazon S3 or you can use that add in for Elephant storage, a company I never heard of. I didn't set that up, thus I have no complete backup. I use Backblaze. There is sort of a workaround. I can run the backup from a Windows machine to get the DNS data up to Backblaze B2 if I want. It's messy but it would work. I did use this method to back up my most critical data but not everything.

I would get at least one drive thats free and clear to xfer your data off. Once you get all the data off, then pull the drives.

Seems like you'll need to make the best of this however you see fit. Just make sure you get the data off completely first before you decide to pull the drives and format them in a different NAS.

the usb drive was recognized as 1.1 not 2.0 so the file copies are taking forever.      I may just copy the data over the network. It sure is a shame. the USB drive is actually a 3.0 and the new NAS supports that, as does my Windows machine.

Well, considering the DNS was designed well before 3.0 and probably downgrading to 1.0 due to compatibility with the drive. Network would be and is always faster than USB anyways. I never use USB for xfering large sized or large quantity files.

when I migrated my data from the DNS-323 I used to have to this DNS-345, over the network was faster.

Ya, I initially tested my 345 and saw around 80-90Mb on the fly wired xfers. I love this DNS.
