For years DLINK's smarthphone app implies its OK to do a wireless upgrade.
But the support site says the upgrade should be done with the cam tethered with a LAN cable to your router.

Of course the latter is safer, but is it really OK to do the former? Whats the official word? Can't they be consistent in their instructions?

The 2630 model has to be upgraded wirelessly.

BTW I dont need to post no model number (but its for a 9 series) and all that other BS which to me are irrelevant.  This is a conceptual question.

Since I installed my 933L, I've always upgraded it via the MDL mobile app when directed or from the MDL web site on a browser. Even from work. Yes, I've been worried on occasion with using wireless upgrades. Has worked for me however. Wired is preferred though. However this does present a problem for those cameras mounted up out of reach or at remote locations where someone can't get to a camera readily.

One caveat with upgrading a camera over wireless is that the wireless signal between the camera and main host wifi router needs to be good and solid. Not environment interferences and other extraneous signals should be present. I think another issue maybe distance and range between the camera and main host wifi router. The greater the distance between them the lower the signal quality will be and thus probably be a cause of a failure to upgrade properly via wireless. My camera is well with in a 15' range from my router.  Also the configuration of the main host wifi router should be taken into consideration and what all is connected to the router at the time before attempting to update a camera. Possible other factors could contribute to bad upgrades happening over wireless.

BTW I took a chance and upgraded some wireless some cabled. I used to do it through my PC which is a lot of trouble IMO. This time I just connected the cam by LAN cable to the router and upgraded through the app. Interestingly, it grew tedious and I ended up upgrading the one farthest from the router by WIFI. Everything worked out fine but as you said it can get one nervous of failure.

I recommend that if users have more than one camera, do one camera at a time. Seamlessly start the upgrade process then make sure the camera comes to ready and test functionality before moving on to the next camera that needs upgrading.
Local PC is ok however can be used last a last resort kind of thing or for more advanced users. Use the mobile app or thru the MDL web site should keep the process simplified.
