DSL 2900AL Viper issues
« on: February 08, 2017, 12:05:40 PM »

Hi all

I've owned the Viper 2900 AC router for 8 months now and its worked perfectly until my ISP upgraded my old motorolla cable modem to a newer Technics cable/wifi modem.

With the help of a very tech savvy buddy we're trying to connect the Viper downstream and disable the wifi capability of the Technics provided by the ISP and want to use the Viper DHCP as currently that is managed by the Technics modem. I want the Viper to manage device profiles and scheduling and utilise its great signal distribution around the house which the technics cant do.

We tried to disable DHCP on the Technics but when I did that the Viper couldn't see the Technics and we could no longer see the admin page to the Viper

The Viper was set up as static ip , residential gateway and we triple checked ip addresses, gateway and primary/secondary dns server addresses were correct from  screen captures from the configuration pages

not sure what we're missing and any help would be appreciated

cheers

Rich

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your modem? Look at the sticker under modem.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the modems web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

From what I can tell this is a AU region D-Link Modem. These kinds of combo modem/routers are meant to be the main host router on DSL ISP systems only. If you have changed from DSL to a Cable ISP system, this modem will not work on this system.

What is the Model # of the new cable modem?

Here the official site for this model modem:
https://www.dlink.com.au/home-solutions/dsl-2900al-viper-dual-band-ac1900-modem-router

It's WAN port is the phone DSL port which is used for DSL ISP system.

I'm not sure if this model modem can do it, however one possible mode you can try is to configure it for LAN to LAN AP mode:
Turning a router into an AP.

Not sure if this will work on DSL modem. This modem isn't sold here in the USA.
