Hey Cliff,

i had the same issues and was told D-Link is going to look into it.  If you need to do a backup in the mean time, just do a regular backup, it will take longer but at least it will be backed up

Hi Klein,

Did D-Link tell you when they will fix this problem? or any schedule for the 1.08 stable?

Thank you

Anthony

Thanks Klein,
At least DLink has acknowledged the defect. I hope it gets fixed.

I noticed the failing backup problem is not on the beta bug list. Is this in fact a confirmed bug by DLink?

Does anyone have backups working? I have tried with a variety of PC's, XP and Vista and nothing works. Doesn't seem to matter if incremental is off or on. Testing the account settings works, but backups fail.

I consider this a core feature of a NAS, I really wish it worked.

Uhh - yes - I have used (at different times) BackupExec & Windows SyncToy to backup to my NAS, both work well except for the speed - SyncToy backs up as individual files, so if you are backing up a few thousand small files, throughput is dismally slow, BackupExec on the other hand builds 1GB blocks so that works reasonably well.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Thanks Fordem. I was looking for a sol'n where the 323 would pull files from the computer. Ideally, pick a folder and exclude certain subfolders and that would sync to a folder on the DNS-323. I've tried setting up a sync, and it fails immediately without copying a single file.

In the meantime, I'm using something GFI Backup which seems like a pretty impressive program; and it's free.

I've *heard* the possibility of D-Link adding rsync to the DNS-323 but that doesn't really help you out in a Windows environment.  Of course you can also accomplish this with ffp, but that's outside the scope of this forum.

Let me make an observation, however.  The DNS-323 itself does not have the ability to be a host-initiated backup device.  The clients (i.e. your computer(s)) need to initiate the data transaction to the DNS-323.  Most NAS are designed to be a target to store data to, not initiate backup jobs.  That is what software and/or servers are designed to do.  BackupExec, GFI, and Acronis True Image work in this fashion.

I've installed GFI and I'm working with that. It has its own issues, but so far it seems to work pretty well.

this backup function from one drive to the other never work for me... it was "seemlike working", but i notice some folder not uploading from one drive to the other.

The absence of a LOGFILE can't help diagnose where it goes wrong. A simple TXT file, like what's already available on the Buffalo NAS can help a lot (it said wich file transfert, and wich one not transfer).
