DIR-655 problems
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:19:45 AM »

I've had a 655 for about 10 months now, it was a rock for the 7 months, then my son kept getting kicked from Xbox live, fast forward to Xmas day. I got Call of Duty 5 from my kids for xmas, and I started getting kicked from the PSN every 5-15min. I tried to hardwire my PS3 to the router, but it wouldnt work. I got so fustrated with it, I picked up a Dlink WBR-2310 and all the problems where all gone. But I have this fancy 655 sitting here and it makes me mad, I tried to do a factory reset on it, and now it seems the wireless will not work at all. I'm about to attempt another factory reset on it, and try it again. Anyone have any insight on it.

Hi Winky,

Do you leave all the equipment on, or turn off the equipment, like the XBox? Is there a Reset on the Xbox? I don't know.

I had exactly the same problem, and it doesn't make sense. I've currently got Live (somewhat) working on a version 1.20 firmware; other versions just fail miserably. With 1.20 the only problem I have is that right after turning on the Xbox, I get disconnected, but after connecting again everything works fine.

You should try that firmware version too.

I just got the 655 and it's firmware version is 1.21 but I have the same problem. I can get connected and then a few minutes into use it disconnects. I can't play games and can't watch netflix movies because it interrupts them as well. I don't see anything in the new firmware that leads me to believe it will fix my problem. I have run out of things to try with this router. Mods or someone please help.

that is really strange actually, i never had that type of problem.

I have my xbox 360 hooked up and my ps3 hooked up as well, both are running wired cable, my Wii is using the wifi and i had a party actually two weeks ago and all three were running while my cousins were surfing the web. The router was running on its fullest and i had no disconnections whatso ever on any. I have teh 1.32 firmware, but before when i had the 1.21, still i had no problems disconnecting.

I dont touch the WISH or the QoS. Well for the WISH i enabled the last box for "automatic" so that is enabled too. Other then that, i just did the regular settings, have it wirelessly locked, guest zone enabled and thats about it.

hmm... good luck with this problem. :(

Try an update to 1.32fw, at this point it can't hurt.

Figured it out!

I had the network running through a UPS to protect against surges. I by passed that and everything is great. I am not protected from surges but it works. I also still get the "can't sign in to messanger" response when I log in but at least I stay connected to Live.

I hope his helps someone.

Running the network through one of those surge suppressors is going to be iffy with connection at that point. You can get loss from the suppressor, and such.  I generally do not run it through anything like that on the backside of the modem. I have a specific supressor for the cable itself leading to the modem. Woks well and without issue.  It is an APC unit.

I believe that gadget_1 was saying that he ran the actual network cables through the UPS as many have ports for network cables.  Have the actual unit plugged in electically to one should have no effect on the function of the router.  I have mine in a Belkin UPS along with my cable modem and telephone's power.
