Tried turning off DHCP and assigning an IPv4 address to the ethernet adapter. No joy. Then I tried turning DHCP back on and resetting the ethernet adapter but adding an address reservation for my MAC address. No joy. Tried deleting both ethernet adapters from device management and rebooting to force reload of the drivers. No joy.
The more I think about this, the less likely I think this is an OS or driver issue. Why would Windows 7 and my ethernet ports have no problem interacting with my crappy little Westell DSL modem/router, but be nearly incapable of communicating with my D-Link?
Got a better handle on what's going on with the console during these most recent experiments. When I manage to get access to the management console on the router, I can go almost anywhere on the console, as long as I do it FAST. For instance, when I went to the wireless network setup (after another router re-set), if I adjusted the transmission settings and set up a WAP password, when I would hit "save settings" I would get the "Please Wait....router is testing network speed" page for almost a minute, and when the console management page returned none of my settings were saved. But when I got to the same page, quickly changed the transmission type, and hit "save", it would save quickly and be right back on the console. If I tried to type in a WAP password and hit "save" I'd get "please wait..." and a save failure. But if I then used a text editor to type in the WAP password, get it to the clipboard, get the console management page, paste in the password and hit save, it would work just as expected. It's like the router is renegotiating with the ethernet adapter (and the Westell) every 15 seconds or so, until it finally gives up and freezes. At that point a desktop reboot doesn't help, only a forced router reboot allows any communication with the router.
I appreciate everyone's attention and help on this.
