Issues with Local Download (Local Backup)
« on: August 13, 2009, 06:57:04 PM »

Problem:

If the process is interrupted the owner of the folders and files already copied is root (if the process runs till the end the owner is nobody).
Having root as the owner makes the partially copied files impossible do delete.

Related request (or alternative solution):

Would be nice to be able to do file and folder actions (copy, delete, rename, etc) from the web interface with root access.

Related question

Is the incremental backup really incremental? I did a test wit a 12K files 80 folders structure changing one file and took forever.

Thanks in advance

I am experiencing a similar problem.  I started copying a large file to my DNS-321.  When I saw how long it would take (as reported by OSX), I stopped the copy.  Now, I am unable to delete the file - from either OSX or Vista.

My device is on firmware version 1.0.  Will try upgrading to 1.02 and report back.

Can you replicate this? Can you see if this with OSX and Vista? I have done quite a bit of this with XP, Vista and Win7 and I have not ran into this incident. Also resetting the unit to factory should reset the permissions please try doing this as well.

Thanks, ECF, for responding so quickly!

1. Yes, I am able to reproduce the problem.  I now have two files that cannot be deleted.
2. Resetting the unit to the factory settings did not solve the problem.
3. Upgrading the firmware to 1.02 did not solve the problem.

I'm afraid to say it, but it looks like the only way to fix this might be to pave the drive.  Unless, of course, you have something else you would like me to try.

Good news!  XP was able to delete what OSX and Vista were not.

Problem solved!

Hi ECF and aridlehoover

I'm using Vista (I don't have XP anymore) and my DNS is a 323 with 1.08beta5.
Yes I can replicate the issue as many times I want.
Using XP to delete the files is not a solution but a turnaround that for many folks like me will not work.

I think that the best solution (apart to solve the broken process) is to provide an application that would allow file and folder actions (copy, delete, rename, etc) from the web interface with root access. Should not be so difficult since we are already have a "tree" like page that is used to select folders to so many processes (setting FTP, scheduled download, BT, etc.). The same interface could be used to add, copy, move and delete functions.

By now, having files sitting on my drive that I cannot delete is an issue (no offense saying that ... I'm very happy with 1.08)

Cheers

Actually, I would prefer that the native OS just work.

Yes, booting a virtual machine using XP solved my immediate problem.  It allowed me to delete the file.  But, why didn't OSX work?  And, why didn't Vista work?  That's the problem that needs to be solved.

Adding file management with root level access to the website is a gigantic security hole.  I would prefer that the devices (DNS-321 and DNS-323) just work with the major operating systems on the market today.

Hi aridlehoover

I don't see file management with root rights from the web pages, since it is your only administrative window to the device (if you do not use funplug).
Is a issue similar to the security issues with ftp, if you don't want the file management available the only thing you need to do is disable, like you can do with ftp and you could do with a telnet access (that could be useful also).
My point is that some file operations  take forever if you pass through an external machine (delete, copy or move between two volumes) and all this can be improved if the operations are available direct on the device. A file management being the less open solution, a telnet or ssh access being the most practical ones (ssh being the most secure).
