Below is some of the basic information requested when posting.

Hardware Version:  A2
Firmware Version:  1.08 b5
Software Version (Easy Search): n/a

Harddrive 1:  ST31000340AS
Harddrive 2:  ST31000340AS

Problem Type:  Function does not work as expected (partial functionality)

Description:  If the DNS-323 is rebooted with Windows 7 64-bit Release Candidate (RC) or Release To Manufacture (RTM), and you go to Computer and try to open the network drive, it fails to open and prompts you for a username & password.  Even if you choose "remember my credentials" it always prompts for u&p.

If you try variants of \\dns_name\volume_1 or \\192.168.0.20\volume_1, it doesn't make a difference.

Also, even if you have the same workgroup on the 323 & Win7 PC, you must use the credentials as follows:

User:  \username
Pass:  <your password>

...the \ is required or the DNS-323 won't authenticate the user.

(Yes I do have a LEGAL copy of Windows 7 RTM- I'm a Volume Licensing customer of Microsoft

At least for the Windows 7 x64 RC version that I use I cannot confirm this. Mounting after startup works as expected.

It could be related to the Network Access GUI page - in another post I have issues with that. 

LH3212-- do you have one specific user who has r/w access to the volume_1 share or do you have a group with more than one user?

My setup is a group I created called "Full Drive Access" and I added three users to that group & assigned R/W access, No oplocks.

Actually, my setup is very similar to yours. I have created a group "myusers" and two users, who are assigned to that group. In addition I have granted access for the whole group to Volume_1 with full r/w permission.
Both users share of course login name and password with their (home) windows 7 systems on two different computers. As I said, works absolutely smooth.

I forgot to mention I also read your bug report (related to this one) about losing network access permissions after a reboot of the DNS-323 and having it to re-establish again. I also rebooted my box several times after moving to FW 1.08b5 but this also never happened to me. Makes me think you might run into some hardware related trouble? Have your checked your hardware? Just an idea....

Just tried my Win7 x64 RC Client.
No problems after reboot of DNS - all mapped drives are reachable without problems.

Only difference: I removed "volume_12 share and all shares have permissins to the usename of my Win7 user.
No matter whether I use \\DNS-323\sharename or \\IP\sharename or net use command.

All drives loose statistics when the DNS is rebooted:



But a doubleclick opens the mapped drive at once.

i had an issue accessing the drive via windows 7 turned out to be a windows update, specifically Windows Live Add In i believe after removing it i was able to access my drives again without issue.

This may be possible.
Up to now I denied all installations of "Live Add In" for Windows and Office because I had some difficulties with my Win7 33bit Notebook after adding the whole "Live" stuff.

I will confirm it is infact the Windows Live Sign-In tool.  It gets installed with the Windows Live Essentials and if you remove it your access will retirn to normal. 

Basically what is happening is the tool is passing your live credentials which the DNS-323 will deny... so if for some reason you wantewd to you could also define the said account with the same password in your DND-323 and that would work as well.

I uninstalled the windows live sign-in tool - leaving msn messenger the only "Live" application remaining.  But I still have the problem with Explorer prompting for credentials when I reboot.  I'll keep looking at it; but something isn't agreeing still with the 323's implementation of Samba.

Even with the Windows Live sign-in -- which is extensively used at my workplace -- we don't have any domain authentication issues regarding that particular plugin and access to our fileservers.  I'm inclicned to believe there is still something that needs to be traced in a lab to figure out what's going wrong here.

We even have two Windows 7 x64 RTM implemented systems with Windows Live on it- no issues with anything in our Domain we can find.  It's hard to test because the 323 doesn't support AD integration; but it's interesting to note "Live" isn't interfering with AD authentication.

To be clear I had to remove two tools:

Windows Live Sign-In Assistant
Windows Live Sync

I think the problem is a combination of two things:

1.  Microsoft tool is passing authentication to the BIOS name of the device
2.  When authentication is disabled the DNS-323 STILL rejects any login/pass combo that isn't valid ... it merely adds the ability to allow anonymous.

So putting the two things together you can get around this problem a number of ways:

1.  Remove the MS tools
2.  Permanently map your drives with "another user account" and just enter "Anonymous" as the username (or a legit name if you want)
3.  Add you Live ID as a login name to the DNS-323
4.  Use the IP Address to map

it's _possible_ you may be able to also do by playing with the trusted/intranet security settings in IE as it seems to impact when to try passing through the Sign-In authentication but I've not played with that at all.
