HW A1 and Intel 5100 AGN card
« on: August 10, 2009, 11:06:12 PM »

Hi,

I need some help.  For some reason my new HP HDX16T with Intel 5100 AGN wifi card can't seem to connect to the DIR-825 on 5Ghz on wifi N.  The DIR is on the latest firmware 1.12.  As far as I've seen the WIFI card also has the latest approved Wifi driver from HP.  I've tried switching from 20 and 40 widths.  The notebook sees the N SSID and tries to connect to it but after a while it'll say, it cannot.  I've tried totally removing encryption but still no go.

Could someone give me a tip on what else to try?

Thanks in advance.

Does it connect if you force 'g' or 'a'?

I'll try. I was able to connect on 2.4 G.  But I didn't try A on the 5.

Hmmm, so 'g' connects but not 'n'.  Did you try setting the router to 'n' only as a test?

XP or Vista?  Have you tried manually running Windows Update to get all patches?  With Vista you may be surprised and find a newer wifi driver from Microsoft.  HP can be horrible sometimes about releasing their own patches.

Alternatively, you can try the Intel reference driver to see if that works better.

Keep in mind that many OEM's will block the use of non approved drivers so your HP may not permit the reference driver to be installed.

P.S.  I just saw your post on SNB and Tim's reply.  I hope the reference driver works with that notebook....

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  But as I noted in the SNB forum.  It still doesn't work.  The new drivers from Intel can see the SSID, but when I try to connect, it says it cannot.  I've tried disabling encription, changing width size, disabling Upnp.  Not sure what else to try.

Have you set the 5100AGN's settings to "802.11n Mode" to "Enabled" and "802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4/5.2" to "Auto"? That worked for me.

Finally got it to work, but it was more trial and error from both the router and PC side.  I think the one that I remembered was setting the WMM in both the router and the Intel Card to on.  I know it's counterintuitive, but after that and hard reboot of both the router and laptop.  It worked.
