DIR-855 range & range with iPhone?!
« on: November 17, 2009, 06:02:11 PM »

Hello!

I have just installed a new cable modem and my new DIR-855 (Hardware Version A2, Firmware 1.13EU) in my new apartment.  :D
The 5GHz network on 802.11N (for the PCs and notebooks) works ok (well, besides some weird dropouts even though I've already deactivated DNS Relay, but maybe they'll be over now with my current channel settings?) and the range is not overly great (quite poor actually), but at least to a certain point it's usable.

But the 2.4GHz network on 802.11G (which I only still need for the iPhone) just doesn't really work well. I can usually connect to it from my iPhone 3GS and at first it shows full reception bars, but after a few seconds, only one tiny little bar is left. The Internet is still working through the WLAN but it's not really faster than surfing over 3G (if at all).
In some rooms (max. 10 meters away from the router, two thin walls in between), I can't even connect to the network to begin with, no reception at all. And even in rooms in which I still get WLAN reception, the iPhone does very rarely connect to the WLAN by itself, I usually have to choose the WLAN for it, which is something I don't have to do with any other WLAN, so it's not a problem of the phone or its firmware (OS 3.1.2).

Those reception problems (only one bar, slow internet, not always auto-connecting) are even there when standing RIGHT BY the router!

At my old home, with my very old U.S. Robotics router and in a big house, I get reception with my iPhone (same OS, 3.1.2) in almost every corner of the house which is about 5 times bigger than my little apartment!

What's going on with that router?! And is there anything I can do about it, so that I can finally use my WLAN with the iPhone?  :-\

Thanks a lot for your help or comments!  :)
