I have my two COVR points connected via Ethernet backhaul.  Point A is in router mode connected to 300MBit internet service.  I have point B in my bedroom, where I'm getting very close to the 300MB throughput via WiFi when I do a Measurement Lab speed test on Google.com.  If I leave my bedroom and walk down the hall to another bedroom 60 ft away, I'm getting about 30Mbit.  This is a wood frame house with drywall, not brick or stone.  Is this much drop off normal at 60ft?  It seems like terrible performance, and doesn't really inspire confidence to go spend another $200 for more points if I have to place a point every 20 ft to maintain signal strength.

It's up to the mobile device to connect to a signal source and will mostly keep connected to the farther signal unless such time as the signal becomes lost to the device or the device finally decides to change to a better signal or the radio is turned off then back on.

I've tested both.  With my laptop hardwired to point B port 2 I get around 280Mbit.  Wireless to point B about 10 feet away from it I get the same 280ish MBits.  When I move 60ft down the hall into the other bedroom, I get 30MBit from point B on wireless.

The house is about 3400 sq ft.  Point A is on one end of the house, it's about a 100ft away from point B on the other side of the house, connected by cat6 Ethernet backhaul.  With point B disconnected, I barely get any signal from point A when I'm in the bedroom.  With point B connected, the wireless signal is strong and the wired speeds are high, so I know the basic connectivity is working fine, and my devices aren't trying to use point A instead of point B.

That seems to defeat the purpose of having a mesh if you have to toggle your phone or laptop's WiFi as you move around the house.  However, out of curiosity, I tried it, and it made no difference.  Same speeds as before.

So turn OFF the B point then test again. Are you getting spec specs while connected to the A point? Speeds will vary some when wirelessly connected. Especially won't be that fast at a distance of 60 feet.

I have seen occasionally oddities myself; waking up in the morning and opening two mobile devices, experiencing excellent connectivity from the first and poor connectivity from the second; although both being located 20cm from each other, less than 5 meters from the closest AP, 20 meters from the farthest.
I did have to switch off and on to second device to get it connected to the closest AP. Curiously, what always give me problem is the same device, brand new, both on 802.11ac.

There are not much documentation about how mesh is suppose to work or I did not find any so far. What FurryNutz mentions both make senses and is a little bit disappointing; I was expecting some kind of magic similar to what exists with phone mobile devices, possibly depending what band is being used, 802.11n, ac or later.

Indeed I had read the first I think, but nothing here explains the mechanisms except through vague marketing sentences. It sounds obvious to me that even these journalists have no idea how this works precisely.

That one below explains the likely mechanic from the mobile perspective, here with Apple. The next time I will be getting issues I will put down the extract power level that my Mobile is receiving from each AP.
