Hello,

I have a DNS-323 (hardware version B1, firmware version 1.08).

Following a problem (e-mail sent by the NAS: Left Hard Drive Has Failed / Right Hard Drive Has Failed Sincerely, Your DNS-323),
I have formated the two drives (2x1TB) and i have do a reset (restore to default factory settings) but the NAS still don't "see" the drives
The NAS makes bizzarres regular noises ("clac"") (from the NAS, not from the disks)

Any idea ?

Have you tried one or two completely different drives to see if the DNS sees and can use these other drives?
DNS may be seeing the SMART status being triggered on the drives and uses this as it's deciding factor to warn the logs of the drives have failed. Once SMART has been triggered on any drive, most other devices will see this as a warning or a failure. I have 1Tb drive from about 10 years ago. Didn't use it alot however SMART has been triggered on it. Did a full complete low level erase and format. Drive is Ok, however SMART is still triggered on it and thus not really usable for important data or daily use.

I've tested the drives with smartctl in Linux Mint using an USB docking station.
Left drive is OK and there is a bad sector for the right one.

Low format does not change that, exactly as you have explained.

I do not have another drives to test but the problem is the same whether with 1 or 2 disks in the NAS.
Without any disk, the NAS does not make the weird sound "clac".

My intuition is that the disks do not start and therefore the power supply (12V) is defective.

The "clac" sounds maybe the drive heads or head arm crashing in the drive. Not good.

You'll need to find some different drives, even some used ones to see of the DNS still works correctly.

I've copied entirely the data from the two drives on an external USB disk.
The two drives do not make *any* sound with an external USB docking station so it seems to me it is clear it is not the drives…
More, the sound is also there with only one drive in the NAS (whether it is one or the other).

Can try a different power supply that has matching power specs...

Other that this, getting limited on resolution ideas. You may wan to try and maybe find a used 323 online if you want to keep that going. Maybe hard to find. I bought a 345 earlier this year to go with my 1st 345. Was hard finding one. Managed to find one of the last ones available that was still new. DNS is EOL.

I have contacted D-LINK and here is their reply:

Dear Customer,
unfortunately the DNS-323 is EOL since April 2011. In 2019 we do not have any spare parts left for this device we are very sorry. You might find some sellers in the internet.

Too bad he ends up for a faulty power supply (even if he starts to get old from a security point of view, SMB1 for example)

Power supplies are available on the internet.  A couple found after a very short search.
http://www.webducommerce.com/adaptateur-12v-5v/alimentation-disque-dur-12v-5v-2a-avec-connecteur-4-broches-p-95130.html  This one has the correct plug but isn't 12v/5v @3A

http://www.webducommerce.com/alim-6-mini-din-12v-5v/alimentation-chargeur-12v-3a-et-5v-3a-avec-un-connecteur-6-mini-din-p-3496.html  This one has the correct amperage but the wrong plug, remember that plugs can be changed with a little work.

It is even possible to use an old computer power supply for testing.
