iTunes and UPNP issue
« on: August 15, 2009, 05:42:56 PM »

On the website to configure sharing I've set the folders correctly. The UPNP server will refresh and seem to work correctly except for none of the files are detected. There is a variety of mp4, avi, mkv, and wmv files in various folders. It probably goes 4 folders deep from the root of the drive. The server is detected by both my X-Box360 and ps3 but no files are found.

On the iTunes side of the server I'm able to select the music folder, its in the format Artist/Album/track.mp3. These are a variety of mp3, aac, and flac files. When I go to click on refresh it will work, and then freeze up the device at 9%. At 9% if anything is mounted it will unmount itself and there is no way to turn the DNS-321 off without pulling the plug out the back.

In the unit I have a 1 TB Seagate hard drive and a 1.5 tb Hitachi hard drive. The music folder being shared is 160 GB and the Videos folder for the UPnP is 344 GB. It's running firmware version 1.02. I've tried 1.03b9 and that one will time out without refreshing the servers. With firmware 1.2 I can keep the volumes mounted in OSX with no issue at all.

Anybody have any ideas as to why the iTunes server and UPnP server fails to work?

The issue with you Xbox and PS3 is most likely just that one of the folders or files contains the @ symbol and this device does not like that an will report no videos found. Just look for this and rename it. Some other symbols may do that as well but this is the most common.

With the iTunes server How large is your audio folder and have you tried selecting just a folder or smaller group of albums?

Thank you for the response.

Yes, the iTunes server will work when selecting a few GB of files. I suppose that 160 GB of music is just too much for this device. I've tried to setup the music folder a few different ways. The initial one had 505 folders (artist name) then inside them were the album folder then songs. Then I set it up A B C ... Neither of these setups worked.

The UPnP server will show up on my XBox and PS3, but no files show up. I have selected a folder that just has avi, mp4, and mkv files in it. That folder is titled "Movies". The folder will show up on both of my systems however no videos are shown. I've put just a few movies in the folder and still nothing.

There may be a corrupt file someplace keeping it from successfully refreshing. The hard part is locating what file could be doing this. The best way I have found is to group your files into a smaller folder and try running scan and see which folders fail then focus on this one and do the same until the problem file is isolated.

Had the same problem with my DNS321 and my PS3.  It would not recognize any of my photo or music files and folders (over 1,000).  I logged on to the DNS 321 UPNP page and clicked on refresh.  It took almost 20 minutes, but when it was done, all of my files could be accessed through the PS3.  Lesson learned - use refresh often.
