Mapping failure in Easy Search (Win XP)
« on: August 25, 2009, 08:59:21 AM »

I've been using the DNS-321 for my modest needs with few problems for some time, but now I'm stuck.

Current setup. Two Vista64 desktop machines and one notebook Win-XP machine connected to the NAS through a Dlink Gigabit switch.

Problem: The Easy Search utility on the XP machine is no longer able to map the NAS. It sees it and lets me turn DHCP on or off (plus, the NAS webpage shows up in MyNetworkPlaces either way). The machine is still able to log into the web interface to do setup and changes, but nothing more. I've tried resetting to factory defaults, down-dating to firmware 1.01, disabling firewalls and antivirus software, deleting and recreating user/group permissions, re-updating to 1.03 beta again, reformatting with ext2, etc. etc. Nothing works. I still can't map through the Easy Search utility, and the NAS icon does not show in the network tree in the XP folder "Map network drive" option...

The Vista machines still are able to map and use the NAS without problem. An Ubuntu install on the problem XP machine is also able to see and write to the NAS, so apparently none of this is a hardware issue.

Any tips or even some harassment or bad jokes appreciated here....

Have you tried mapping the drive using the Windows utility?

Click start and goto RUN and enter \\192.168.xx.xx (IP address of DNS-321) and hit enter. Goto the Volume and right click and goto Map network drive and follow the instructions.

Many thanks, ECF. That worked easily. Wasn't aware the Run.... option in the Start popup menu would allow that. Let's see if I can get the regular drives folder "Map network drive" working again. I'm still clueless as to what's happened to this machine. I owe ya one!

Well, found my problem.  Me.

Apparently I had disabled NetBIOS in the TCP/IP settings for the net adapter.

Duuuh.
