Vista backups create un-accessible folders
« on: July 06, 2009, 07:05:54 PM »

NOTE: This topic started as "Drive capacity wrong: 320GB, 85GB used, 10GB available???", but I have narrowed down the issue and am reposting it.
===============================

I am hoping someone can try to duplicate this problem, to confirm that it is not the fault of my system (I really don't think it is.) I back up three Vista computers (one running 32-bit, two running 64-bit) to my 323. Once backed up, the backed up folders cannot be accessed, no way, no how. I have tried everything, including managing permissions, beta firmware 1.08, etc. Not only can the folders no be accessed, but I cannot even read how many bytes are being used. In the previous topic, I thought my drive capacity was being incorrectly reported, but I now realize that the Vista backups were sucking up all my space but that space was not being reported; thus, I had very little space available even though I had used very little space.

Prior to purchasing the 323, I backed up the same computers to a network drive on a spare Windows 2003 server, also using the built in Vista backkup utilities. I have no problem accessing these folders, which are exactly the same as the folders on the 323 except for their location. In fact, if I copy the folders from the spare server to the 323, I can access the folder no problem, but when I back up directly to the 323, the folder are inaccessible. I eventually had to reformat the 323 and start from scratch, again backing up to the spare server rather than to the 323.

I would really appreciate it if someone would try to replicate my problem. Simply back up a small number of small files from a Vista computer over the network to the 323, and see if you can access the backup folder on the 323. WARNING: Try this with only a few small files, because if you get the same result as I get, you will be stuck with an inaccessible folder unless you reformat and start all over again.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Define "backup".. are you simply copying files?  If so, detail how you're coping them.  Is there a backup application you're using (e.g. Windows Backup, Ghost, TrueImage)?

We can't begin to help you without knowing a specific series of easily reproducable steps.

FWIW, I have used both Windows Vista 64 & Windows 7 64 with my 323 and over the last year I've yet to experience what you're seeing with copying files via Windows Explorer, FileZilla FTP client, Windows Backup, ThinkVantage System Restore, or Acronis True Image.

When I backup from my three Vista computers to my DLink drive, I am using the back up utility built into Vista. I'm not sure what the utility's official name is, but the screen is labeled Backup Status and Configuration.

Thanks.

I have this same problem - has anyone figured it out?

I used Vista backup from two different PC's to DNS-323 and I can't access either back-up directory or any files in them.  I have gone through all of the change permissions, and take ownership ideas, but it will not let me do anything like that.

BTW - I can access files I just copied over without issue.

Please help!!!!!!!

I was never able to resolve this issue. I tried the latest beta software, but it did not help. I have been backing up to a different drive, and then coping that backup to my DLink. That system works just fine (but is very inconvenient) with the exact same files that are inaccessible if backed up directly to the DLink.

I've got a fix - from tech support no less... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

To map the drive in Windows:

- Go to the Start menu, and select Run
- Type '\\ip_address of DNS' and press Enter (ex. \\192.168.0.10)
- You will log into the drive at this point
- Right click the desired folder to map to your system, and select 'Map Network Drive'
- In the wizard, select the desired drive letter and click on 'Connect using different username'
- Enter the username and password setup on the DNS-323 and click Ok
- Click Ok at the bottom of the page and the drive should be fully mapped
