need to reboot every other day? [firmware v1.11]
« on: June 19, 2009, 06:00:27 PM »

My wireless clients begin to suffer ABYSMAL throughput unless I reboot my DIR-825 every other day.  Is this normal for this router?

Has anyone else experienced this?   ???

It seems like there is a memory/resource leak or I have a defective unit since I cannot believe anyone should expect to have to reboot their router this frequently.  My prior Linksys router was rock-solid for months at a time with my same wireless client.

I'm running firmware version 1.11NA,  2009/04/27.

Yep, just read some of the other threads about the router locking up with 1.11 firmware, you're pretty much stuck restarting it every other day until DLink fixes the firmware.

As in the other threads, turning off DNS relay may prevent you from having to reboot it frequently. Since I made that change, I've had it up for about 6 days without any other problems (previously, I could go about 4 days before needing to reboot).

Well, the degradation is not limited to my wireless clients.  This is the throughput from my wired connection after the router has seen only 24hrs of traffic:

This is the same test after a reboot of the router:

Notice the difference in ping times.  This is simply not acceptable.  When is D-Link going to offer a firmware update?

I should have learned my lesson the first time I swore I'd never use a D-Link product again.  Prior to purchasing this unit I was happily using a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware for several years.  The Linksys was rock-solid.  Since switching back to D-Link 30 days ago, I have had nothing but trouble.   :'(

I too am having this problem.  It happened before 1.11, but not _near_ as often. Now it’s every 1-8 days.  I run Vista, XP, Linux and ?OSX? (whatever the iPhone uses).  When it happens, the wired and wireless clients can still see each other, but nobody can get through to the Internet.  Nor, can any of the clients reach the DIR-825 itself (say, for web management).  Nor, will the DIR-825 dole out DHCP addresses.  The local LAN interface of the DIR-825 DOES respond to PING, but that’s about it best I can tell.  When this happens, I can disconnect the WAN interface of the DIR-825 (that goes to my cable modem) and connect it up to one of my computers and that one can of course then reach the Internet.  Connecting the cable back to the DIR-825 and one has the same problem.  I don’t exactly push through a lot of data, and my WAN speed isn’t that fast (3Mb/s).  I’ve spoken to multiple people at tech support but nobody has a clue.  After repeating all this to the last lady, she told me that the DIR-825 was experiencing “congestion” and that there was nothing they could do…it was a problem with my cable modem.  I’m a Sr. Network engineer…about blew a gasket with that one.

Yep, that sounds exactly like the problem I reported here and that others' are also experiencing.  When the router gets into this state the connection speed is so slow that can take upwards of two minutes to render a simple html page.  Kind of reminds me of the days when I used a 300kbps dial-up modem with an acoustic coupler, except worse.

For D-Link support to deny that there is a problem with their firmware and not acknowledge that others' here are reporting the same issues either means 1) they don't read these forums; 2) don't test their routers prior selling them to the public; 3) don't care.  This is not a good sign.

Seems like the problem is getting worse for me.  This is only 22 hours of uptime...

Awhile back there was talk of a class action lawsuit due to this da*n lockup problem.  I can't find reference anywhere to it now but am about pissed enough to investigate the viability of this myself.   I think we’ve all been WAY more than patient enough, especially considering the lack of communication or competent tech support from D-LINK.

I too would like to have better communication from DLink but at the same time discussing class action suits in the manufacturer's forums is probably not the best way to go about it.  Better idea is to pick up the tel and call DLinks corporate offices in Taiwan and ask for the President's office.  Its been my experience that they will try to help when you take the effort to call Internationally.  In today's modern world you can call Taiwan for only a few cents per minute if you have a decent Int'l rate plan.  And please remember to be nice and soft on the telephone.  It goes a long way when speaking with those foreign to you.
