FW. 1.21 DNS Relay and Website Filter....
« on: October 06, 2009, 04:44:34 PM »

Hi,

Somebody posted in another link recently about DNS  Relay and Website Filtering being related, in that he had turned off DNS Relay as others had posted, but somehow doing that disabled his Website Filtering Policies....

So I says to myself...Self...we use website filtering policies here....I wonder if we have the same issues....

So I checks my router setups and the policies are intact, but the website filtering is NOT working as it used to...to block certain sites for child protection reasons...

So today I re-enabled the DNS Relay setting on my FW 1.21 A2 and poof...Website Filtering is working again.... I know this because, this afternoon, one of my kids came whining why Facebook wasn't working.....

SO I too must ask....WHY or WHAT is possibly related between DNS RELAY and WEBSITE FILTERING  ????

I personally can't even begin to come up with an answer to that question, because logically...to me at least, they aren't even remotely related.... But yet somehow the programmers of the FW managed to link them....

OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING ???

Don't really know the real answer but taking a shot in the dark.

When DNS relay is on the router acts as the DNS Server, it then can check the websites it is going out to against the website filter.

When it is off it just forwards all the traffic to the ISP, so it doesn't have the information to check the websites against.
