Purchased used DNS323, no network connection (hardware)
« on: September 19, 2009, 04:30:49 PM »

Unit: DNS323
H/W Ver A1
F/W Ver 1.02
S/N P479174003206

Puchased used on Ebay. Description stated unit inop, just needed new NIC.

Now that I have the unit, the NIC is obviously part of the main board.

There are no drives in it and before I purchase some: Can I get a new board? Is it going to cost more that a new DNS 323?

I plugged it in and pressed the power switch. The blue light comes on steady and the network light blinks for 1 quick flash and then remains dark. My router indicates there is a 100/Auto connection on the port but does not see a device or issue an IP address. The DNS323 software does not find the device. I tried changing my computer NIC to the same address range as the default DNS323 setting and tried to access the unit but no luck.

I read on the forum older firmware versions won't do anything unless a drive is installed. Is ver 1.02 an old version? I don't have drives yet and not going to buy any if this unit is completely dead or the cost of a new main board is to high.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Truthfully, I'm going to guess that it'll cost more for the parts than a new unit costs.

I assumed you reset the device?

I pressed and held the reset button for 30 seconds. My plan before I saw this unit was a SATA PCI card and large SATA drive for the old desktop which is serving as my NAS for now.  Guess I could get the drive 1st and if the DNS is dead, I can get the SATA card for the desktop and continue using it as my NAS. That computer is on all the time anyway running Seti@Home

Bought a 1 TB Seagate drive and installed it to see if anything would change. The harddrive light illuminates and flashes like the drive is being accessed, but I still can't connect to the unit. I've tried the reset button, different network cables, connecting to the router, connecting direct to a PC and using the default address, but no luck. Guess this unit is a brick. Are there any other things I can try? If not, I'll gut the case and use it for a flower pot or something. The DNS 323 does have a very nice enclosure.  :)

Since the unit is out-of-warranty and "bricked", have a look at: http://wiki.dns323.info

Might turn out that it can be revived via one of the Hardware methods.

Cheers,

Thanks for the link. After hours of reading, I still think it will become a flower pot.
I don't think my DNS even boots. From reading posts, I get the idea the power light should blink as the unit boots and waits for an IP address. Mine doesn't blink, it comes on at power up and never blinks. Tried the reset per the directions on the wiki page and the power light never blinked.

Setting up a serial connection is beyond my patience and skill level.

Well, the description on eBay seems correct.  It needs a new NIC, i.e. a new main board! :D

I didn't pay much for the unit, so I'm not upset. Setting up a serial connection might be a good winter time project when it's to rainy to play outside.

I have a new, still in the box 1 TB Netgear Stora behind the seat in my Jeep. I'm trying to figure out how long my wife will be pissed if I bring it in. I have network access in my garage so I could put it in there, but at some point my wife would wonder why the NAS interface is different and then she'll want to know how much it cost, and that's when the fun will begin.

It's not nice to hide such things.   :o

I do this a different way.  There is so much computer equipment here that she has no idea what is new and what is now. :D

LOL

Return the Netgear, buy a DNS-323 ... "dispose" of the faulty unit ... presto, just like magic.

LOL, thanks for the ideas.
The Netgear is in the house and wife wasn't upset....Kinda wierd. I still haven't taken the Netgear out of the box and I'm still thinking of returning it. It was $240 out the door. $19.35 of that was CA sales tax. Grrrrr!

From what I've read, the Netgear Stora only allows raid 1 when a 2nd drive is installed. I would rather have 2 volumes, or one massive volume.

So I don't know.........I only have 7 days left to return the Stora. Wish the place I bought it from carried the D-Link, I would just exchange.
