Cannot connect through laptop but can through desktop
« on: October 16, 2009, 07:06:15 PM »

Just bought the DGL-4500 from Newegg (even after reading these reviews). Luckily it is still at firmware v 1.02 and I am NOT planning on updating that lol. My desktop connects to the wireless router (currently connected through a Linksys Wireless-G router) but my laptop says connected with no internet, but I cant even access the router setup page, even after powercycling the router/modem, restarting the computer, and changing the wireless encryption type. My laptop connected fine to my old router (an old Netgear) and to other routers. On a side note, I set up the router with my laptop hard-connected to the router through ethernet so I know that it works fine like that.

My Desktop (the one that works) is a custom build with:
GIGABYTE P45-UD3R mobo
Core 2 Quad processor
4 Gigs ddr2 800 ram (corsair)
NVIDIA gtx 260 GPU
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
and the Linksys Wireless-g router (other stuff too but I assume that the rest doesnt matter)

My laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite P205-S6287
It has a Core 2 Duo processor
2 gigs of ram (dont know the bandwidth)
Integrated crappy graphics
Vista Home Premium 32-bit
Intel(R) Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965AGN (integrated wi-fi card)

What I want to know is: What settings can I change in my router/laptop config settings to enable it to connect. IF ABSOLUTELY neccessary I would buy a PCMCIA wi-fi card for it...but I would rather exhaust all other options first.

Please post here if you need more infomation or if you have any suggestions. Thank you :)

It's the WiFi card driver.  Roll it back to the one on Toshiba's site or the original driver.  Anything else will cause the laptop to keep dropping.

Just make sure you disable Windows Updates for that device.  There is an updated driver for Vista that Microsoft pushes which causes the problem all over again.

I know I sound like a n00b...but how do I disable Windows Update just for that device without having to screen through all windows update each time?

You you search for updates and see the driver listed.  Right click on it and select hide this update.
