New DNS-321, one HDD LED blinks constantly
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:15:50 PM »

Hey folks, I'm new here having just gotten the DNS-321.  There is a ton of activity on these forums, good or bad.   ;D

My Question, regarding the front LED indicators: the right LED for the HDD is constantly blinking, it's not a regular steady blink, it seems to change frequency.  What is that hard drive doing?  I have copied about 25GB of files to the NAS in the last 24 hours.  This LED blinking started to worry me, I thought the HDD had a problem.  I have 2 1TB Western Digital Greens in the NAS.  What I wonder is if the NAS is syncing the right drive to the left drive, after the fact?  I thought that in a RAID config that the 2 drives get written to simultaneously, but this LED activity is leading me to believe that the NAS is writing to one drive first, then copying to the 2nd drive when it's inactive.

Any info would be appreciated.

Question 2 (OK I'm cheating) does the LAN LED in the middle pretty much show activity all the time?  Because mine is going nuts.

Did you check the status to see if it thinks it's synchronizing the volumes?

If you are referring to "Sync Time Remaining", yes I checked it constantly, and it always said "Completed" just as it does below.  UPDATE: the right LED HDD indicator finally stopped blinking on it's own.  I wish I knew more about it, it is an "indicator" after all, so what is it indicating?  :)

HARD DRIVE INFO :

Total Drive(s):    2
Volume Name:    Volume_1
Volume Type:    RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining:    Completed
Total Hard Drive Capacity:    981858 MB
Used Space:    38669 MB
Unused Space:    943189 MB

Don't know why the light blinks, I can only presume that it's something to do with the disk status.

What firmware are you running? 1.03 was just released I would recommend updating and resetting the unit to factory defaults and see if it still blinks like that?

I have the right led blinking problem too. I have updated to 1.03 firmware and have reset to factory defaults, then run the set-up again. I am using 2 1tb Western Digital green drives in standard mode, not RAID. I don't have any problem with them, they pass the diagnostics fine. But that D*** light blinks constantly. I haven't found a solution yet, either.

See above, my light did stop, I guess it was synching even though it didnt have that in it's status.  It did go off after 24 hours or so. I'll bet your's will also.

I know my RAID-1 array took forever to sync after I did a failed drive test.

Come to think of it: I have UPNP enabled and maybe the drive was indexing media files.  That would explain the HDD activity and the fact that under status is stated "Sync completed".

Again, if I haven't been clear, I was the orignal poster and the problem of constant HDD activity on the right HDD went away after 24 hours or so (maybe less I didn't notice).

It went away, that's a good thing. :)

The right LED on mine quit blinking too, but after about 4 hours. The left LED stops after a few minutes. It does this every time I turn it on. I don't know what the deal is. I think I will try swapping the drives in the bays and see if it still does it. I will post the results of the swap after I get a chance to make the swap.
Thanks for the replies.

Don't swap them if this is a RAID array!

OK, I swapped the two drives and restarted the DNS-321. I have the left LED blinking for about 1 to 2 minutes. The right LED blinks for about 15 minutes, then settles down. I think everything is ok, both drives just passed smart check. I think I will quit fooling with it and just use it and not worry about it.
