Well here are my experiences with this product.
1. First DNS343 died with 3 hours -returned to D-link for replacement.
2. Second DNS
I have 4 x Seagate ST3400832AS (these drives are qualified)_
I created a RAID 5 volume - Vol_1
and a JBOD Vol_2
This has been running fine until this morning when I shut it down to re-route the AC power cabling.
When I powered the unit back up Vol_1 is missing Vol_2 is still OK
- rebooting the unit has made no difference.
All 4 drives are online
Firmware verion is 1.01

Is there anyway of getting VOl_1 back as I do not have a backup of these files

The purpose of RAID 5 is to protect against a disk drive failure......

Few Questions:

What does the status in the DNS-343 report?  If a ST3400832AS has failed, the OLED or status should indicate which member has failed.

I recommend copying the files off your JBOD_Volume_2 as you will likely lose this data when you remove the failed member.

Have you tried cycling the DNS-343 off/on again?

If you're in North America, you could look to update the firmware to 1.03.  It provides better error reporting, OLED activity, and a Scan Disk function.


Lastly, a RAID solution does not negate the need for a backup.  RAID solutions are intended to provide some redundancy in the event of a single HDD failure ... if more than one HDD fails, the RAID will collapse.

Status shows all disks are OK.
Yes I have tried power cycling the DNS343 several times Vol_1 is no longer there.

I am waiting to hear back from Dlink support to see if there is any way of recovering the Vol_1 data.

The DNS343 was a backup of all the data on my PC which had a C: drive failure on Friday..........

I work in the IT industry and our company sells high end RAID subsystems.
I agree RAID 5 protects against a single drive failure, however all my 4 Seagate drives are OK.
The DNS343 controller has lost the the Vol_1 information

Clearly there is a fundamental design problem with the DNS343.

Please try updating to firmware 1.03 and see if the volume returns

I have been in contact with Dlink support in Australia and they sent me the 1.03 firmware update.
I put it in last night and Volume _1 did hot come back, and Volume_2 is not longer accessible......
All 4 drives are online.

Is there any possiblity of getting the data back or am I dreaming?

Hope you were able to back up Volume_2 before applying the firmware update.

Cold start the DNS-343 and have a look at the logs to see if anything abnormal appears in the log.  Afterwards, verify the SMART status on each HDD to see if you get a response from each one.

Lastly, power down the DNS-343 and try removing and inserting each HDD (one at a time) ... essentially reseating each HDD.

If you are still unsuccessful, my hunch would be that the volumes are lost.

yes I backed up Volume_2 before I did the upgrade.

1.03 Status screen shows all the disks are on-line and there are no errors in the log.

Did a shutdown and power back on - no difference - all 4 disks online with no errors.

You can install the drives into a Linux PC or there is a driver for Windows that will allow you to use drives using the EXT2/3 file system you can search on the Internet.

Volume_1 has gone - cant get the data back. 

I recommend that you keep a backup of all your data on your DNS343 because sooner all later you will  have to restore it..........

Dlink have agreed to refund my money - here ends the story  DNS343 GOODBYE
