1522 Speed issues to WNDR3700
« on: November 03, 2009, 09:43:51 AM »

Ok, this is my last effort before discarding the 1522 and buying a Netgear piece of equipment.

I've been trying to configure the 1522 to act as a bridge to the 3700 and have had partial success. I can get it to connect to 2.4Ghz band or the 5Ghz band, but can never obtain measured speeds above 20Mbits/s.

A little background, the 1522 is approximately 25-30ft from the 3700, and there are 3 walls between the devices. Connection strength is 72%-80% in the 2.4Ghz band and 50-60% at the 5Ghz band. I understand that is pretty low for 5Ghz, so I've been mainly using the 2.4Ghz 802.11n band.

I'm on Channel 5, Using WPA2-AES only, Auto 20/40Mhz, Best Transmission Rate and 100% Trasmit Power. I have QoS turned off (seems to make things worse).

I'm running firmware 1.21.

So, I guess my question is, is the 72%-80% signal strength in the 2.4Ghz band the reason my speeds are bad? If so, I'm not sure what else I can do to improve the speed beyond relocating the bridge.

20Mbits/sec just doesn't seem very fast at all for an 802.11n connection. I need 30-40Mbits/s sustained for extending the network, which should be well within the scope of this bridge.

20Mbps , is that the connection rate , eg 300Mbps is the theoretical max rate of i522 , or transfer rate of data to computer ?
Try moving the 1522 into different positions and as high as possible . could help
I am getting 32-47 Mbps transfer rates uploading from my comp to my NAS , both have gigabit ports , as does my wndr 3700 and 7200 rpm drives .
My 1522 is about 40 feet away from router and 4 walls .

20Mbps is the actual transfer rate (Using an O!Play device to render, and it tells me the network speed it's getting from the 1522).

Everything is on Gigabit LAN, the only obstacle I seem to be facing is the WNDR3700 -> 1522 Speed hit, that is limiting the transfer to 20Mbps or less.

What signal strength do you have that you are capable of 32-47Mbps? Is it higher than 70%?

It's very possible I have a lot of interference in the walls, I just want to rule out my router before I start moving everything around.

signal is between 78-85% . placement of router and bridgr helps , had to play around a bit to get best signal .
Another thng is I left wmm enabled on the wndr 3700 , seems to help , also have enable video network on 5 ghz wireless network i wireless settings , and qqs is off

Well, so far I'm at all the same settings as you are, but 6% weaker signal and half the throughput.

Anyone else have any ideas? I'd really rather get this thing up to par than replace it.

Then it has to do with walls , construction of and angle of walls to signal . a wall at certain angles can  act like it is 4ft thick even if it is really only 4" thick .  Try placing router as high as possible and use the stand , I got better signal with stand , and placement of DAP .
Did you get better throughput with another bridge before ?

WELL 5 GHZ  band does not goe through walls as well as 2.4 ghz ., less interference on 5 ghz band , but distance penetration is not as good , guess your wall are too much , angle of walls to signal make a big diff .
