DNS-323 DEAD
« on: October 30, 2009, 01:29:21 PM »

Hi Folks, it appears my DNS-323 is no longer working correctly.  I do see a mediocre light on the power brick, but no matter what I do I can not get the LED to come on or the disk to spin up.  I have had it for a few years (~3), not sure of the mtbf for this device.

So I guess my question is, what can I do now?  If I buy a new dns-323 can I put my old raid0 disks in, or do I have to buy some usb enclosure and only put 1 disk in, format, then copy from usb to dns-323, then put in second disk and have it bring it into raid0.

I am open to suggestions, in the end I would like to see my data from dead dns-323 to something else.

Thanks in advance for any help

Do you remember what firmware your original device was on when it died? The simplest thing would be to basically get another unit, make sure its running the same FW as the old one, power down the unit, insert the drives in the same sequence, power up the unit. Raid 0 will not operate correctly with only 1 disk in, both must be present.

Thanks for the quick response.

I was running the latest, I think 1.07.

So if I buy a new one, load 1.07, then power down and install both disks you think it will automatically recognize the raid0 disks and not try to reformat them? I thought dns-323 only liked disks it actually formatted itself.

Obviously I am trying to avoid losing data on both disks, if I put both in are you sure it will not erase the data?

I would think this is somewhat common and that our dlink friends would have a procedure for it :)

Let me know what you think.

Since it's a RAID-0 array, you MUST put both of the disks in the same slots as they were previously to recover any data.

No matter what, the DNS-323 wont just format your drives when you put them in, it will ASK you and provide you with a button to click. Although it should not do this with the new unit, if it does you have a couple options.

1.) Turn off the unit
2.) Access the samba share via \\IP_Address_Of_nas\
-If you can access the samba and you see a volume_1, you can copy all of the data off of your raid onto your pc and reformat, then copy it back.
3.) Use harddrive recovery software.
