File sorting order
« on: July 22, 2009, 05:11:48 AM »

Hi!
I've got DNS-321 plus DSM-520. Both are with latest firmwares. When I'm browsing a folder with movies, files are sorted alphabeticaly and this is great. But when I try to play music (mp3 files) files also are sorted by names not by numbers. For example when I browse a folder through a PC I have:

01-World in My Eyes.mp3
02-Sweetest Perfection.mp3
03-Personal Jesus.mp3
04-Halo.mp3
05-Waiting for the Night.mp3
06-Enjoy the Silence.mp3
07-Policy of Truth.mp3
08-Blue Dress.mp3
09-Clean.mp3

But when I'm trying to play it by DSM-520 I have:

Blue Dress
Clean
Enjoy the Silence
Halo
Personal Jesus
Policy of Truth
Sweetest Perfection
Waiting for the Night
World in My Eyes

It seems like DNS-321 ignores track number at ID3-Tags. If there is a way to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

There are no setting in the UPnP AV media server to change the file order so it is read in alphabetical order.

Very good answer! Thank you very much!
Now seriously. It is very frustrating not to be able to listen to music in normal way, as the whole album should be: from track 1 to the last one. This is not just my needs.
I believe this is not such a big deal to make some changes for media server to sort audo files (mp3, m4a, whatever it can play) by numbers first. And put it as a hotfix for firmware, or Beta.
Please, let me (and many others) listen to my favorite music in the right way!
Thanks...

Small update.

It seems that device even ignore playlist order. If I check playlist I can see track number and Song name in correct order from 01 to 10. But when I load a playlist the order is still from A to Z.
Please do something. I don't believe it is so hard to fix it.

Thanks and regards.

It is very frustrating.  I have a DSM-520 and a DNS-343.  I bought both together because they are supposed to be compatible.  The file order stinks!  I made sure to have the latest Firmware and still nothing sorts correctly.  I called D-Link, but the people at D-Link can't answer my questions.  They say I have another computer running on the network that is screwing with the file order, yeah, that's probable.  I have reworked all the the ID3 tags for every song I have to make sure the server reads the order correctly.  But it does not.  D-Link products stink.  The service is terrible.  I will never buy another D-Link again.  All it takes is an ID3 recognition in the software, so it can recognize genre, album, artist, and track number.  All I want it to do is browse like Real Player or Windows media player, but it doesn't do it as it was advertised to do so.
The work around is to run the media software on you computer and share from the network drive.  It stinks because you have to keep that computer running.
I think I'm going to buy the PS3 and use my DSM-520 as a boat anchor.  It probably won't even do that well!

Got rid of my DNS-321. Bought Synology-209j. Can't wish for more!
Good luck to everyone!
