Can't login to my router's admin page and can't factory reset
« on: October 05, 2009, 07:13:04 AM »

My 655 has been up and running flawlessly for 1 week. Today I wake up and the wireless isn't working. I tried to login to the admin to see what's going on and I can't do it. I plugged/unplugged, rewired, rebooted, tried with every browser. NOTHING works.

I even tried resetting back the modem back to factory, but I can't even do that. Nothing happens when I hold down the button.

The LAN works, but wireless and the admin area is hosed. WTF?

You may have to push firmly on the reset button and hold it depressed for at least 10 seconds. With the router powered up too I believe. Did you change the default admin password? If you didn't and didn't encrypt your wireless it sounds like somebody logged in and changed some settings.

Yes, the router was secured with a different password than the default.

Normal behavior when holding down the factory reset after 10-15 seconds is all the LEDs will blink several times.  If you keep holding down reset it will continue to do this every 10-15 seconds or so.  Factory reset sets the password to blank (no password).  After the factory reset the WifFi/Radio LED should light up after 10-30 seconds.

If you experience different behavior than the above I'd RMA it to the retailer you bought it from.

I had a similar experience with my first DIR-655, except everything worked but the radio.  RMA'd it for another one, which was ok.

Yes, nothing happens to the lights on the front when I hold down the reset button for any length of time. Too bad I tossed the box and all the BS in it.

IMO, the most common cause of failure isn't the unit itself, but the A/C adapter.  In your case the adapter may have partially failed - supplying only enough power for the Switch (LAN).

It needs a 12v power supply capable of 2 amps or more.  Might be worth trying another power source...

I RMA'd it for a refund and put up my old Netgear G router. Still undecided if I'm going to re-buy the 655 or get something else.

Damn I have the same issue, what does RMA mean exactly? I know its to send it in but whats the acronymn? Well anyway yeah any length of time holding reset doesn't do anything with the lights, I can connect wired but wireless isn't working for me at all either. I had this router for half a year. How do I go about sending it in to get a refund or a new one?

Most companies that will repair/replace merchandise will require you to submit an application.  If you meet the criteria for a repair/return they will issue you an RMA #.  The # means that they have confirmed that you are allowed to send the product to them and they will work on it.   The RMA is to help them weed out non-warranty products so they don't waste their time even looking at it.  It's a good system and one that has worked out so well that it's an industry standard practice for most tech related companies.  Consider yourself lucky if you never have to request an RMA because it means something is broken that shouldn't be. :)
