Mixing HDD on DNS-321
« on: November 26, 2009, 11:47:37 AM »

Hi,

I have the DNS-321 with one HDD in the right slot (Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB ST315005N1A1AS) and it is getting close to full. I would like to buy another HDD for the left slot but was wondering if I could purchase a 2TB.

Are 2TB HDDs compatible with the DNS-321 (and my setup), and if so, which ones are recommended?

I would like a 32mb cache and 7200rpm and a good warranty.

Thanks everyone!

Yes 2TB drives are supported. I do not have a recommendation for drives. There are no known issues with any drives currently available.

I have a 1TB WD Green drive along with a new 2TB Seagate LP 5900rpm drive in the DNS-321.  Both drives are seen at full capacity and work fine.  Moving a large amount of data to the drive was an adventure though...

I would recommend looking for a low power and slow drive.  This will reduce the heat and power consumption within the NAS, also the slow drive is leaps and bounds faster than the NAS enclosure.  Normally this also makes it less expensive.  I prefer Samsung but I don't believe they have a 2 TB drive out yet so the Seagate LP 5900 gets my vote, since you're asking.
