Simultaneous Backups on DNS323
« on: December 26, 2011, 05:35:52 PM »

Hi, I have been running a DNS 323 for about a year now with no problems. I back up from two servers (I'll refer to them as server 1 and server 2 using Comodo and set to trigger automatically at 5pm and 530pm. This has been going on for about 9 months now. About 2-3 months ago I noticed backups from one of the servers (2) failing on Comodo with an error 53 indicating an invalid path. I had presumed that the NAS hibernated and the delay in the spin up caused the back up to fail. Since it only happened once in a while I let it be since I do daily full back ups and can manually trigger the failed back up as needed.

Today I had both server backups fail. I triggered the server 1 backup manually while it was running, I moved to server 2 and triggered the manual back up. And just about the same time the server 1 back up failed with the same error code. Since the NAS was up and running it could not be the delay from the HDD spin up. I'm now considering if the DND323 can support simultaneous back ups at all. Perhaps the previous failures was when the server 2 backup start overlapped with an unfinished backup job from server 1.

Has any had this experience before? Can DNS 323's OS support simultaneous back up jobs.

A single process, if heavily used, can overtax the processor in this unit resulting in reported failures when trying to access the unit through other means. In other words, depending on how you access the unit, you can certainly cause delays that will result in processes failing.

I have 3 DNS-323's that I use for various purposes. I do however try and restrict any disk writing activity that is heavy (as a full backup would be) to a sinlge occurance at a time as I have seen failures as you describe. Installing a shell and monitoring with 'top' is an easy way to see the requests getting queued. If the software can't handle the delays, then there can be failures.

I used to 'push' backups onto the units. What I do now is 'pull' them instead. This allows the NAS to work at its own pace and sequencially perform the backups.

Hi dosborne,

Thanks for the quick reply. Could you tell me a bit more about 'pulling' back ups. I presume you mean running an app from the NAS to back up the server and rescheduling them so as not to have the jobs tripping all over each other.

I had not explored the other tools in the 323 as I had only envisioned it as a repository and the activities and tasks driven by other machines. What app are you using, installed in the NAS to run the back up? Since the NAS native OS is non-Windows (the exact one escapes me at this time) this seems to limit my choices. I don't recall a native back up as part of the installation or configuration, but I'll check in to that tomorrow.

I suppose another possible solution is a single network back up solution that will sched the backups for the servers to the NAS in turn.

Thanks again
