Change Folder Icons?
« on: December 09, 2009, 01:31:16 PM »

Anyone know of a way to change folder icons on the DNS-323 when viewing mapped folders through Windows?

I would like to use a program like FolderMarker to customize the folder icons into organized colours. But it only seems to work on Windows native folders, not Unix ones.

Any suggestions?

You can do it manually by...

A: How to change Drive icons and labels (Windows XP,2000)

To change Drive icon:
1- Click Start > Click Run > type “regedit” to run Registry Editor
2- Find following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer
3-create a new Key and name “DriveIcons”
4- Under DriveIcons create a new Key with the drive letter ( for example C )
5- Under that drive letter create a new key and name it “DefaultIcon”.
6- Give it the default value of the icon you want to use, for example : c:\windows\system32/shell32.dll,74

B) To change Drive Label:
Do step one and two above

Under DriveIcons create a new Key with the drive letter ( for example C )
Within drive letter create a new key and name “DefaultLabel”.
Give it the Default Value, the label you want.

Close Registry Editor and reboot your Computer

But read next post...

You can change the Drive Label (B in above post) much easier by simply right-clicking on the Drive (in My Computer, etc) and choosing "RENAME".

Once you've done that, it sets up the Registry structure that is explained above... so it's easy to add the new DefaultIcon key (as detailed in A) above).

OK, now that is the boring way... this little freeware program allows you to change the icons without editing the Registry.

Get it from : http://www.brothersoft.com/drive-icon-changer-102805.html

You can use ICO files, or select a specific icon within a DLL file.

Note: I have only ensured that it works in XP, and not given it a thorough workout or checked other versions of Windoze..

I appreciate the reply, but I'm actually trying to change the folder icons, not the drive icon.
