Raid 1 Question. How to build data on 3x500g harddrives
« on: December 10, 2009, 05:19:37 PM »

I have a DNS 323 running Beta 1.08 setup with Raid 1 with 2x500 gig drives.  I was thinking about buying an extra 500gig drive as a backup drive.

I know I should be able to take out 1 drive and pop in the brand new drive and rebuild the information.

I am planning to have that as backup.  My question is if there is a good way of swapping the '3rd' drive in and out every month to keep a backup.  Do I need to format the '3rd' backup drive before rebuilding to insure that the older information on that drive is not rebuilt to my NAS?

Thanks

IMO, this is a REALLY bad idea!

If you want a backup, and you certainly should have one. just put that drive in a USB enclosure and do a backup that way.
